If you were the principal of a school in the USA or Canada or wherever you are from, and had to hire a Korean to help teach the Korean language to your students, would you like to hire someone with a criminal record? Would you like to hire someone from abroad who uses drugs? Would you like to hire someone who is out for sex with other teachers? Would you be concerned about their appearance?

As a teacher and parent here in the states, thinking of going back abroad, I would want the best from Korea to teach my kids.

I think we as teachers should be very respectful of other cultures. My two cents.

They hire who they choose to hire. They require teachers to have criminal background checks. They do drug checks. Who cares who has sex with who (as long as it isn't with a student)? What are you talking about appearance? By whose standards? By my standards I would never hire someone who wears their religion on their forehead. Guess you wouldn't get the job.

Just my 20 won.

I myself would want a teacher that

1) taught Korean in Korean...not English (the opposite is true for Koreans teaching English in Korean).
2) didn't over drik (non-alcoholic...aka male Korean)
3) didn't smoke like a chimney (aka male Korean)
4) would try to convert my child to whatever bastardized religion they are a part of) (I'm not catholic...I'm Christian...huh...what?)
5) hit my kids with sticks or beat them.
6) were idiots...beating kids today, even though it's illegal and everyone has a camera to put the beating on the internet.
7) would hit my kids because her hair was not short, straignt and black...

Need I carry on OP? You want to use broad generalizations...so can I.

It takes a pre-meeting before getting this light bulb changed with the appropriate staff members in attendance and then finally we make an appointment to oversee the task being done together.

This happened to me last week. It wasn't a light bulb but similar. Quite laughable.

No one said Koreans should allow the things you said, but we would like a transparent system so if complaints are made against us we can at least know what they are and whether or not there is any merit to them.

The system they are proposing will enable complaints to be made in secret, with no justification or evidence whatsoever.

Would you want to work under such a system?

I think that the biggest complaint is that the Korean Government asks for more of foreign teachers than it does Korean teachers. I have no problem with jumping through a million hoops in order to teach, and I agree that better people are better teachers (eg, not paedophiles, or criminals, or drug addicts etc). I also think that it's racist if you assume that all white teachers are drug addled HIV carriers who want to have sex with Koreans (no matter what their age apparently). If we get tested for HIV, so should our Korean counterparts. If we have a CBC, so should our Korean counterparts. If we get tested for drugs, so should our Korean counterparts. As an employee...don't I have the right to expect that the people I work with are treated the same way that I am? I mean, I don't want to work with some drug addicted criminal!

Where is it verified that Korean teachers aren't required to have CRCs and drugs/AIDS tests?

If I were a principal, I would not care how teachers wore their hair, whom they dated, and I especially, would not care if they liked American/Canadian food.

Of course as principal, I want only the best for my school for its shiny new guk eo program. That means light skinned Han princesses, nicely dyed hair, great legs and a nice smile. I would love for them to be Ewha or Yonsei grads but once they`re pretty - Han yang dae of Ansan will do just fine! I only take the more qualified men as a last, last resort.

In the US they do require all teachers to go through a criminal background check. At least in the 3 different states that I taught in.
As was stated before, the only problem that I have is that it is not a requirement of all teachers in Korea, it is a requirement for all foreign teachers.

I think that it is acceptable for the criminal background check for all foreign nationals, because to get any visa you shouldn't have a criminal (felony) record.

However, blood tests is a little over the top for a visa and work permit.

I am curious about the purpose of this thread though. OP, what is your motivation for the thread? Or are you just trying to stir the kettle?

If this isn't a troll, I say this: I'd properly vet any candidate relative to my requirements. I would list my requirements. I would interview a teacher and execute the requirements list against the teacher. If the requirements were met, I would hire the teacher (or the hakwon). If they weren't, I would move along.
