I see people sardonically refer to Korea as "sparkling" on Dave's. Where does the joke come from? |

I doubt it. nor do I expect you'd seen it on Dave's. Its more or less died out in the last few months. Unless you were digging around old threads during which time it should have been easy enough to figure out the context since it was constantly brought up. You're either a sock, a troll or both and not a terribly good one. |

Wow... I am totally not a sock puppet or a troll! I was just wondering because I had seen people reference "sparkling" a lot. In fact it's on the main page right now in the general discussion I think, where someone says "Sparkling UK or Sparkling Korea"?
I'm a recent college graduate going to Gwangju in a couple of days for my first year as an ESL teacher and I was hoping to make some friends and talk to people on this board. I'm kind of surprised to be shouted down and assumed to be a troll for asking what a sardonic reference meant. Why would I troll about wanting to know what people were referencing in the boards? Or lie about Googling? It was an innocent question.
I've lurked for a while to get a good sense of advice from the board, and it's been really helpful, but maybe I should just keep lurking. I wanted to understand a reference to know where you guys were coming from.
...Happy New Year, guys? Is there a reason I'm missing why asking this question would bring up drama? |

Yeah...you gotta be very thick skinned many times here. People love correcting others on this board no matter how trivial. Don't worry about making friends on this board (if it happens then all the better)...you will probably make many where you are going. |

In the summer and months leading up to it, it appeared "a lot" it was in basically every other thread in multiple posts. I've probably seen it once in the last 2-3 months.

And yet you start a thread about a term that has fueled countless argument filled threads....
something that is ridiculously easy to google: http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&source=hp&q=korea+sparkling&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=korea+sparkling&fp=ca7bc37eb6518610
the term that shows up on the front page is in reference to both the UK and Korea, so why didn't you ask what it is about both? In order for you to call Sparkling a meme you would have had to see the old threads and the context and meaning should be more than clear. There certainly hasn't been enough use of the term in the last 3 months to justify referring to it as such.

The amount of posters who seem to come back here to troll after being banned is staggering. A new user asking about something that fell out of common use months ago is a pretty big red flag. |

Oh ok. Why would they just post to stir things up though? I mean is it that vital for them (just curious)? |

Honestly, I was just curious. I did not mean to troll or start drama. I have no idea how to prove to you I am not a troll, but you're welcome to PM me or we can talk on aim or something and I can assure you I am not trying to start any drama. I had no idea it was a dramatic thing to ask about. It just seemed to be an "in joke" on Dave's and I was curious if it had originated on the board or something. It was something I had wondered about, that's all.
I am honestly sorry if I started anything. |

Yes..that is what trolls do.
I think most of the people who get banned here seem to end up banned for making inappropriate statements (usually about Korea), at least those are the people I tend to see disappear since there aren't really any notifications about it. They also seem to be the ones who come back with new accounts to ask questions and bring up things that have always lead to aggressive and controversial threads. So yes, bringing up a term that was used by many people to make disparaging comments about Korea for months seems like exactly the kind of thing a troll would do. Especially when its use has all but stopped.
I can't imagine a scenario where this person lurked long enough to be exposed to the word "sparkling" so much as to refer to it as a meme but have zero context to understand where it originated from. and not realize that it was a term that was often used in a disparaging manner. |

Not true...I used it yesterday. I was bored and a little pissed off. |

I understood that it was being used disparagingly. What I was curious about was if it was originating from a PR campaign, or if it was just a board in-joke. I am not trying to disparage Korea in any way! I'm really excited to leave for Gwangju on the 5th. |
