|
|
I rented a car in Jeju over the break and I think I got a speeding ticket.
The GPS alerted me to a speed camera and I slowed down but I saw a red flash from the camera when I was passing under it. When I actually passed the camera I was doing about 75, but up to that I point I was driving about 83 in an 80 zone.
Can anyone tell me what the fine might be? I was barely going over but I am pretty sure the camera snapped a picture.
It was a rental car and the car wasn't even rented with my Korean licence but Ill accept the responsibility for the fine. |

There isn't going to be a fine. The red light always flashes when a car passes it. |

And if there is...I bet it will be about the same as smoking in the subway - 30,000 won. What a joke. |

83 in an 80 zone is a joke, you won't get a fine and yes, it's true, the red light always flashes when a car passes by.
Try getting on the cab past midnight in Seoul. They'll be doing 140 for you until 50 meters in front of the speeding machine, where they'll slow down to a nice 80 (just like every other car on the road) then speed up again in a matter of seconds.
I don't drive so please don't quote me on this, but if you went over the limit by no more than 20kmph, then it's a 30,000 won fine and you just go to the police station with your license and get your ticket. Pay at the bank and you're done. |

I got a ticket a few months ago. My wife's company told her they got a picture of me in the mail. With further probing we found out that her company had been fined (they own the car) and that the fees had already been deducted from her pay. Pretty painless really.
I was doing 52 in a 40 and was charged about 30,000 KRW. |

I go through them daily over the limit, but not more than 10km/h.
80 in 70, 100 in a 90. Never gotten a ticket. |

I've gotten 3-4 of those tickets and they are usually 30-40,000 won for a little bit over but I think once I paid 60,000. From what I hear (and experienced), you're ok 1-9 kph over but tickets are given out for >10kph.
But not all the cameras are real, and even the real ones aren't turned on all the time. The tricky ones are the portable ones that they set up on the side of the road. One time, they were just setting one up that was so well hidden everyone would have been getting tickets for going 95 in an 80 zone. |

Just got notice of ANOTHER ticket. This one pisses me off.
I'm borderline hostile about the way Koreans drive through red lights...or drive in general. Now I get a ticket for failing to yield at a light? FU! I've knowingly blown ONE light and I know where and when it was and why I went. Maybe this light was totally unseen by me, I just don't know.
I wonder if I'm an easy paying target? I got profiled at a DUI stop last February. 15 cars ahead of me get waived through, they do a double take on me and hit my car with a club yelling for me to pull over. No drunk but they sure wanted me to be by the pattern of their questions. |

They give out speeding tickets in Korea?
Really?
This is the first I've heard of and I've been here for about 19 years.
Never heard of anyone getting a speeding ticket in Korea.
Do you think it will work against you when you go to renew your visa later? |

Nope. Tickets are tied to the car not the person. You could have 100s of tickets and no problems with visa or immigration.
I got a ticket once going 80 in a 70 zone. Yes 10 km over the limit. I should have fought the ticket, but too much of a waste of time for a 30-40k fine. The road I was driving on had in fact been an 80 zone and they lowered it. They did not have new signage posting it and the 80 on the road were all blacked over and not replaced. It would have been an easy win, but as I said, waste of time.
The cop was surprised as hell when I went to pay the fine though. I guess most foreigners don't pay or have a shoddy reputation on it. |

Would only matter if you decided to sell your car. |
