I'm thinking about making it a stipulation to renewing my contract, regardless of whether or not I stay for 3 years. |

You can't get a 3 year E-2 visa. You could only get a contract saying it's for 3 years and renew/extend your visa every year. I have a two year contract but it's more of a good faith agreement because the visa is still for one year at a time. Don't know if your school would be willing to do that, but they probably would if they could, cause having someone re-sign for three years is a definite plus for them. Maybe not if it's a public school under a program like EPIK or SMOE. |

I had a 3-year F-2, but I was only on it for a little over a year before getting my F5. |

Think about what you're asking, OP: you're asking your employer to be responsible for something administered by the government, in this case Immigration.
The other poster was correct in that unless you have an F-series visa, the best you can do is push for a longer contract term. Then again, if you do get that, we'd hope not to see you back here looking for information on how to get out of a contract because a better offer came along!
Be careful what you wish for... |

Uh, sorry to break it to you, but that's how you get a working visa, your employer is the one that asks for the term.
I already know how to get out of contracts, not a problem. |

I have seen something like this before in a contract:
"The employer agrees to renew this contract for an additional year providing
that [conditions stated]."
It was for an academy, but I can't remember which one. Also, it doesn't seem like this would really guarantee you anything, as there were conditions stated that the academy could always use to terminate the employment contract at the end of the first year. For example (-the employee has not received any warning letters from the employer).
Even if you have such a clause in your contract, it wouldn't mean that immigration would have to issue you an extension on your visa. However, if your academy was satisfied with your performance then I can only think of a few obvious reasons (caught for drugs, etc.) as to why immigration wouldn't give you the extension.
Good luck. |

Because immigration only issues one year E2 visas. There is no such thing as a 3 year E2 visa. So you are asking your employer for something they cannot legally provide. |

I have to raise the bullshit flag here.
Your first F-2 is either a year or 2 years. You must be on an F-2 for 2 year before you get an f-5.
Either you are full of crap or the immigration office is so incompetent it's not funny.
I'm not denying either...lol. |

Exact same situation as mine. Got my first F-2 (one year). Renewed and received three years, and will apply for my F-5 this March one year into my first extension.
Roll up your flag and go home. |

What others are saying about the 3 year F2 is correct.
As to immigration only issuing a one year E2....not true.
E2 can be for two years as well...I know a lot of E2s on 2 year visas. |

Really? Cool. I guess I was wrong. I'd never heard of it yet, only for E1s.
What kind of school do they work for? |

I know a lot of people that do a lot of things and wow all that is so cool to talk about.
Any of these multi-year visa holders wanna scan their passports (personal info blackened out) and show us the proof?
Didn't think so. Didn't happen. |
