Hi all

so i'm hitting the Phillipines in February vacation, just a few questions:

1- is it better to take cash or traveller's cheques or what? I dont have a credit card.. also if i need to get travellers cheques or an international debit card then where should i go?

2- how much (in won) is a good amount to bring with for a two week stay in the Phillipines?

thanks guys!

Ps, Soho Travel agnecy is awesome, they're not necessarily the cheapest, but they're definitely the most professional i've encountered so far in Korea.

1. I'd take cash. To lessen the amount of money you will be carrying, I'd book my hotel in advance. If you don't have a set plan, then maybe not.

2. I'd bring 100,000 a day as a maximum, including your hotel. If you pre-booked, then $50 a day. Unless you plan to do expensive things there. $50 will easily allow you to eat 3 nice meals a day, take taxis, etc. You could go as low as $20 a day for food and stuff if you're really careful, but you won't have as much fun.

Take cash and take dollars. You can easily spend $50 a day and have fun in Boracay. By Feb the resorts should be less expensive. Orchids Resort is pretty cheap in station 3. They have air-con rooms and helpful staff. Nothing fancy but good place to sleep. http://www.orchidsboracay.com/

Except for Chinese New Year (Feb 13-20) when some places (including Orchids) charge peak prices.

Buy US$100 bills IN KOREA and exchange them as needed when you are here in the Philippines.

Do NOT bring won or TCs. They are hard to cash/exchange and you will pay a premium for their use/

Do NOT depend on a Korean International card (unless it is an actual credit card). They are hit and miss at the best of times.

It is a safe bet to budget $100 for each day of your stay as a short term tourist. It is easy to take the extra cash home if you don't need it but it really sucks to run short during your vacation.

Boracay is NICE but it is a tourist resort island and is one of the MOST expensive places in the Philippines to spend a vacation. Island hopping is a better choice if you are spending more than a few days here. Ferries and domestic flights are frequent and CHEAP.

Hit Boracay for 3-4 days then work your way over to Cebu via Panay and Negros. Or do 2/3 islands like Boracay, Panglao (alona beach) and perhaps Cebu city to end your travel and let than be your exit point returning home.

7007 islands to choose from. There is much more here than just Boracay.

Island hopping sounds fun, I booked by ticket from Incheon to Cebu....then Manila to Incheon....I haven't bought any tickets in country yet. Will this be a problem, I'm kinda keen on goin to Cebu and spending a day of 2...then goin from there.

Will this be a problem?

Those 1000 peso bills are a hassle to unload. If you can, get the trader to give you 500 or smaller bills.

With the exceptions of Christmas / new year, and Easter week you will have no problem with domestic travel (air or sea).

Ferries are frequent and cheap. As little as p100-300 for a banka between islands and p1000 for the overnight ship from Cebu to Manila.

There are fast catamaran craft that are much faster (but also more expensive (p500) between local islands. Airfare on the domestic carriers (cebu pacific, sea air, zest air) can also be VERY cheap. Cebu - Manila for as little as US$20 (one way).

Hey.....Just some tips I have on going to the Philippines!

Everything there is about money when you are a foreigner!! If you have white skin and light colored hair, or taller than 5'10, Filipinos and Filipinas only see dollar bills....be careful. When taking a taxi, always tell the driver to use the meter, otherwise he will quote you a price then take a long way to the destination and tell you it will be more money because it took too long....Its not like in Korea....AT ALL.

Be careful when you meet women there.........again, when they see foreigners, they see dollar signs. Even if the woman isnt technically a "working girl" she will try and scam you and ask for money to hang out with her!! It happens everywhere!!

You should go to Boracay, its a good place to visit or a few days.......you can book tix online for about $50 each way....its not expensive.....try Cebu-Pacific or SEair.......You dont really even need to book a hotel...just show up and walk around for about 10min and pick one!! I stayed at "Dave's StrawHat Inn" .....its located in Station 3. Its a nice, clean, safe place to stay. Its a bit away from all the bars and nightlife, but if you're not into that, then its good.

ITS CHEAP IN THE PHILIPPINES TOO!! Depending on what you want, you could spend about $3 to $5 a meal.....or you could eat in the tourist restaurants and spend $10 to $20 a meal. Be warned.....everyone will try to sell you some kind of piece of crap souvenoir....and I mean everyone!! The bottom line is dont go to the Philippines expecting it to be like Korea....because its the exact opposite!! Remember, its still a 3rd world country......Other than that, have fun, be careful and watch your pockets!!!

I will be going there for about a month. From what I read, you have a 21 day visa when you land, then you have to get an extension. It also said something about getting that at the airport when you land. Have any of you ever done this? Is it easy? Expensive? Thanks!

You CANNOT get an extension to the 21 day visa waiver stamp at the airport when you land. Getting it REQUIRESa trip to the immigration office and you WILL waste a day getting it done and waste another 1/2 day to pick up your passport when they are finished.

If you are planning to be here for more than 21 days, save yourself the hassle of the trip to immigration for an extension; go to the Philippine embassy in Seoul (Itaewon - samgakgi station) and get a tourist visa (good for a 60 day visit). The visa cost is about the same as the extension (after you get done with the "extra" charges that you don't see on the website.

The last I knew the Philippine embassy was at/closer to Noksapyeong station, between Itaewon and Samgakgi.
