EXACTLY! I think this whole "invasion of privacy" to-do is exposing (heh) nothing more than the lingering mile-wide puritan streak in American thought. Ooooh, somebody saw a fuzzy version of your naked body...WHO FREAKIN' CARES? Really. Grow up, people.

That being said, this is interesting as well:

The whole issue of airport security is foolish.

All of the hijackings of commerical aircraft since and including the Lockerby crash in the 80s have been perpetrated by males of a certain ethnicity and a certain age group who are followers of a certain religion. Something like half of them have had the name Mohammed.

This ladies and gentlemen is more than just, in the words of President Obama, a "systemic failure." The attacks have been done by, again in Obama's words, "extremists." However, we all know which of the major religions these "extremists" follow.

It must be about control, otherwise why search grannie's little shampoo bottles and face cream? Why confiscate grampie's shaving tackle. If they were really trying to make the skies safe for travellers, if that was their top priority, then they would know who to search and who to body scan.

If and when we make the skies safe how will we make the shopping malls safe?

I want to hear the leaders of that certain religion decrying these savages who do these crimes in Allah's name. I want to hear this outcry world wide. I want to hear and see the various Muslim clerics condemning these criminals. I want to see this from NBC to youtube, from the BBC to the CBC. I want to see them in their little white hats and medieval beards decked out in their robes on the TV, on the six o'clock news. Until I hear this and see this I want the visa restrictions and the deportations to begin.

I'm surprised that most people seemingly prefer patdowns to bodyscans. A bodyscan seems a lot less invasive in a "look but don't touch" sort of way.

We're probably a whole lot more vulnerable to truck bombs than airplane highjackings anyway. I guess it's only a matter of time before the US government puts TSA agents at truck stops, trucking terminals, adult video stores, and rest areas and does patdowns, bodyscans, and baggage checks of truck drivers.

Keeping the terror threat alive

Posted: 2009/12/29
From: Mathaba

George Orwell in 1984 wrote:
It will be a world of terror as much as a world of triumph. The more the Party is powerful, the less it will be tolerant: the weaker the opposition, the tighter the despotism. Goldstein and his heresies will live for ever. Every day, at every moment, they will be defeated, discredited, ridiculed, spat upon and yet they will always survive.

But what was strange was that although Goldstein was hated and despised by everybody, although every day and a thousand times a day, on platforms, on the telescreen, in newspapers, in books, his theories were refuted, smashed, ridiculed, held up to the general gaze for the pitiful rubbish that they were in spite of all this, his influence never seemed to grow less. Always there were fresh dupes waiting to be seduced by him. A day never passed when spies and saboteurs acting under his directions were not unmasked by the Thought Police. He was the commander of a vast shadowy army, an underground network of conspirators dedicated to the overthrow of the State.

The war in Afghanistan isn't going well at all. The economy is near collapse. There is a constant feeling of doom and gloom. Life is a drag for most, more so for international travellers. There is dissatisfaction with bureaucracy, delays, lack of customer service, and the constant harassment of make-belief security. Citizens are weary, staff and officials are bored. A petty airline official or security officer will be ready to call the police the moment you question his or her motives. The system is at breaking point, tempers rise, the level of complaints goes up, but there is respite on the horizon: mortal danger, another terror threat.

As long as fear can be generated, people fall into place. America, the West, the "free" world, the "international community" are at war, a never-ending, perpetual war, the "Totale Krieg" Hitler only promised, but America delivered.

Blissfully unaware that al-Qaeda was an American invention all along, an off-spin of the days the USA was fighting Soviet Russia in Afghanistan, people feel threatened and scared, thank their governments for protecting them, and accept further inconvenience limiting their freedom of movement as a necessary evil. In line with the restrictions on liquid items, maybe after the discovery that the latest foiled terrorist had sewn explosives into his underpants, all passengers should be made to remove their underwear before boarding a flight. We could introduce the "two minute hate" sessions from 1984 before queuing at the security check-in, to get them into the spirit for the strip search. The actual choice of the security industry is, however, likely going to be expensive body scanners that peep beneath people's clothing as already trialled in Manchester.

Orwell wrote:
It does not matter whether the war is going well or badly. All that is needed is that a state of war should exist.

Actually, Mr. Casper, the American government and military is an invention of Al Queada.

All of those troops in Iraq and elsewhere are patsies and dupes. They are not American soldiers at all just hired guns paid for by Osama Bin Laden to kill Muslims. Saudi oil money is paying for this. In this way the Muslim world will beieve that they are being oppressed by America and will accept fewer rights and more social control.

You can see how this has effected women in the Muslim world. Since the control of the American government by Bin Laden they have fewer rights and are more acceptable to stonings etc. They accept this because of their fear of an America, which doesn't really exist at all. Modern America is an invention of Al Queada.

My conspiracy theory is just as valid as your's, no?

Actually, Mr. Beck, no, it is not.

The difference is that mine is backed up by documented fact. Or are you going to deny that Al Qaeda was a creature of US intelligence to counter the Soviets in Afghanistan?

No one is denying that the US government funded the Mujahadeen with guns and money prior to the defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. This has been well documented although your use of the word "creature" is a little too strong, IMO.

Shifting alliances have been part of global politics since the beginning of time. The USA supported Stalin's regime 1941-45. At that time Germany was the greater threat. This doesn't mean that Stalinist Russia was an American "creature."

Orwell talks about the necessity of continuous warfare for economic and social control reasons. We can even use 1984 to compare Bin Laden with Goldstein. It would make a good undergraduate essay.

Warfare has been continuous throughout the history of the world. Peace is unusual and breaks out for only short periods of time. Still, I would argue that we westerners are freer now than in any point in the history of the world. The sky is the limit today.

Kids have carte blanche in school to behave as if they were princes and princesses. Westerners travel freely all over the world. Economically we are richer than ever before. I live like a king compared to my parents and probably so do you. Our medical care is the best in the world. Our nutrition is second to none. Our lifespans are increasing. Men have the freedom to marry men and women to marry women.

On any humanitarian scale you wish to measure us by we are the best. Our freedom has not been taken away. Not in the least. We are the envy of the world. People from all over the globe are scrambling to live in the west. This is not because we have less freedom and opportunity. It is because we have more.

Yes, we have to submit to some extra security in airports. I would argue that this is because we have not protected our borders as we might have. I am confident that this will change. There is little in the Muslim world, with the exception of oil, that we want or need here. We just need to recognize this and act accordingly.

Needed 3 hours to clear YEG for US bound flight today. All passengers are patted down and no carry on luggage is permitted. Also must stay seated for final hour of flight.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/31122.html

Quote:
All travelers flying into the U.S. from foreign countries will receive tightened random screening, and 100 percent of passengers from 14 terrorism-prone countries will be patted down and have their carry-ons searched, the Obama administration was notifying airlines on Sunday.

The more stringent Transportation Security Administration rules, to take effect at midnight, follow the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a U.S. airliner headed into Detroit from Amsterdam.

These are changes that werent widely in place for all carriers or countries on 12/24, a senior administration official told POLITICO. These are sustainable measures that are a significant enhancement of our security posture. TSA will continuously review these measures with our global aviation partners to ensure the highest levels of security."

All passengers from countries on the State Departments State Sponsors of Terrorism list plus all passengers from other "countries of interest" such as Nigeria, Pakistan and Yemen will receive full body pat-down and physical inspection of property, the official said.

The countries on the State Department list are Cuban, Iran, Sudan and Syria. Other countries covered by the TSA directive include Afghanistan, Libya and Somalia. A complete list was not released.

A much higher percentage of all travelers from all foreign countries will receive such screening than is currently the case, the official said. "The screening could also include explosive detection technology or advanced imaging technology where its available, the official said.

Kristin Lee of the TSA, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, announced: "Today the Transportation Security Administration issued new security directives to all United States and international air carriers with inbound flights to the U.S. effective January 4, 2010. The new directive includes long-term, sustainable security measures developed in consultation with law enforcement officials and our domestic and international partners.

In other words, there will be a new normal for international travel into the U.S. The enhanced security measures apply to all international flights to U.S. locations, including both U.S. and international carriers, the official said.

All international passengers will be screened and the majority of passengers will be screened using threat-based or random measures, the official said. These are designed to be sustainable measures that are a significant increase in our security posture.

The measures apply to all passengers with passports from or itineraries through State Sponsors of Terrorism and countries of interest.

But not the UK and other EU? The UK is a leading sponsor of islamist terrorism.

Here's what the bodyscans look like: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=972_1262283908

I bet some of the TSA agents can't believe they've finally realized their lifelong dream of being paid to sit around and look at porn all day.

I'll have to think about Jenna Jameson and walk through the scanner sporting wood when I fly.

Quote:
Since the attempted bombing of a US airliner on Christmas Day, former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff has given dozens of media interviews touting the need for the federal government to buy more full-body scanners for airports.

What he has made little mention of is that the Chertoff Group, his security consulting agency, includes a client that manufactures the machines. Chertoff disclosed the relationship on a CNN program Wednesday, in response to a question.

An airport passengers rights group on Thursday criticized Chertoffs use of his former government credentials to advocate for a product that benefits his clients.

Mr. Chertoff should not be allowed to abuse the trust the public has placed in him as a former public servant to privately gain from the sale of full-body scanners under the pretense that the scanners would have detected this particular type of explosive, said Kate Hanni, founder of FlyersRights.org, which opposes the use of the scanners.

Chertoffs advocacy for the technology dates to his time in the Bush administration. In 2005, Homeland Security ordered the governments first batch of the scanners five from California-based Rapiscan Systems. Rapiscan is one of only two companies that make full-body scanners in accordance with current contract specifications required by the federal government.

Also, the full body scanners would not have exposed faruk and his little plan to meet some virgins.

Citizens are revenue.

If you add up all the lost time of every traveler who has been inconvenienced as a result of the shoe bomber and now this guy...

Then add up the extra workforce of TSA's needed to conduct the extra pat downs/searches. Cost of scanning equipment, legislation, workers, media energy expended, time wasted worrying about this...

Over the course of the next few decades...

It would have to be in the 10's, 100's or even thousands of billions of dollars.

To say that these two dopes didn't win is erroneous. They have negatively affected the lives of millions of travelers who pass through airports daily.

Misguided dopes + 1 trillion
