Ok, I've heard a few things about this ddong-chimming business, but does it actually happen on a regular basis? Do kids really do this to their teachers? Have you ever ddong-chimmed someone else? Any interesting ddong-chimming experiences?

I worked in a kindergarten with about 350 little people, so I used to get ddong-chimmed fairly regularly until I complained after i was front-chimmed Shocked -> my exact expression, and whinged to the school principal who told the kids it was not acceptable to ddong-chim their foreign teacher! They listened, too, because it's not been a problem since.

I was always surprised by their accuracy, too... Shocked Evil or Very Mad

*sigh* All the time. You can tell a 5 year old a million times but they never listen. Being a glorified babysitter means you have to grin and bear it if possible. Sad

Basically, if it happens in my class I sit them all down and show them what i will do with the finger. basically I will break it. they get the message pretty quickly.

My first day of teaching kindergarten in Korea was much like my first time in a prison shower.

Once in a hogwan and I turned on the student (elementary) and asked him what the hell he was doing.....in my loudest, meanest voice I could muster. Thought the kid was going to faint. I didn't smile, laugh just glared...he cried.....good!

No problems after that. Loved the kids and mostly taught kindy! Funny after that I was never bothered and in fact constantly got little presents and chocolates left at my desk. Don't give me no *hit and there won't be any!

Jade the mean!

Where does this come from? I taught some kids' classes in the early '90s and never saw anything like that. My wife says it's nothing she's ever heard of...but then she lies all the time anyway, so who knows? Gotta be a recent development...

I'm a kind and gentle person but it would be a cold day before any kids got away with that kinda crap in class Twisted Evil

jensen I hope its just a fad then. I can't see how anyone can get enjoyment out of sticking their fingers up someones bum. If i did that in Australia I'm pretty sure the amount of fingers I would have left would be 0.

When it's done correctly it'll put you on the ground immobilized and Korean kids do it to each other all the time. I suspect (just suspect) that it's become generally accepted by kids that it's something you can/should do to foreign teachers.

Once again, thankful I don't teach kids.

My ex-sister in law used to do it to one of her nephews all the time. I don't know how it started but many Koreans seem to think it's funny and cute.
Maybe back in the old days they couldn't come up with any good board games so they just started poking around. Who knows?
Everyone would ask me to turn off my music at parties because that is not what Koreans do at "parties". Poking a kid's ass is fun, listening to the Stones is disturbing.

Squeeze your cheeks tightly, then they'll think foreigners don't have one.

Why would this make you thankful you don't teach kids? Just make it plain that it's not acceptable. And then there is no problem.

I'm under the impression Beaver is pretty old. If I was getting on, kids wouldn't be my speciality either. Wink

Here's some advice: take a week and teach the kids the rules of student/teacher interaction. One week, I took one period everyday to teach the following rules:
1) Do not put your fingers in the teachers' butts.
2) Do not touch the teachers' genitalia or breasts.
3) Keep your clothes on in class. (I might add during breaktime, too)
4) Do not sneeze on the teacher. Cover your mouth and turn your head.
5) Do not cough on the teacher. Cover your mouth and turn your head.

For the most part, this worked, although not all the other teachers taught their kids. Those kids get yelled at by the supervisor.

The only problem is that the korean helpers find it funny to poke the kids in the butt, so on occasion a student forgets it unacceptable.

Moreover, I can write "sex educator" on my resumes now!
