|
|
I was browsing through the channels on TV and ran across a show that has a bunch of good looking foreign girls speaking Korean. It looks like they're asked various questions and then they speak about the subjects. Does anyone know what the show is about and what they talk about? |

Called "미녀들의 수다," in English "Beauties' Chat," or "Chat with the Beauties," or "Misuda."

The show has gotten mixed reviews from foreigners. Well, from foreigners who express their opinion at least.
For me, on the one hand it's nice to see foreigners on TV speaking Korean. They're introducing Koreans to countries they otherwise wouldn't have heard of, and showing that there are more people speaking Korean than just Koreans.
But, the show does get tired. Seems like all the episodes are simply going through the stereotypes held of different countries. Recently they introduced a panel of Korean women and Korean guys to I guess add their input.
The show has had some controversy, too, mentioned most recently in the LA Times. A German panelist wrote a book critical of some things in Korea and netizens went crazy:

And the biggest scandal happened in November when a Korean college student went on the show and said short guys were "losers." The world stopped turning, I think. From the LA Times:
Quote: |
Within hours, Internet users had tracked down the woman's home page address and graduation photos. Tagging her "Loser Girl," they made her posts public on her university's website and on shopping and plastic surgery sites.
The woman soon closed her page on a Korean social networking site and issued an apology. Like others, she declines to speak publicly for fear of further provoking Net users. |

Interestingly, over the summer there was an episode bashing foreign guys, but the netizens didn't seem to mind.

My first thought was troll, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. The show is called Misuda or chatting with beauties, and seems to regularly be the source of some drama or other (most recently the "short guys are losers" thing). Also, it's scripted. |

I am tired, and I was wondering what "nitch" was. Yeah, it's niche, a French word.
I, for one, don't like the show. It parades Western women as if they are zoo animals. You don't really see Western males up there. I am not for the objectifying of women. Sure, it looks nice, but having women from other ethnicities on display like that seems in bad taste. I can understand the women wanting to do that, but if we did that in our countries, people would be complaining about racism. |

Pfft, why would they? Most of them are lonely, angry, introverted Korean men. |

While we're on the topic of discussion programs. Do they have any current event/political debate shows here? Back home a few times a week they get some people who have a saying on a matter (often the prime minister, some other ministers, some researchers, some politicians and some random people with an opinion) together in a studio to discuss current events. I used to watch it a couple of times a week and loved it.
Do they have the same thing here? If so, what's the name of the program and on what channel does it run? I would like to see a program with MB debating with some professors and politicians and maybe a couple of foreigners thrown in in the mix if appropriate instead of having talk shows where they discuss which current pop singer is the most beautiful. |

They have a few I believe. I'm guessing you're either Korean or pefectly fluent in Korean? The most popular one is called 100분토론 where they invite professors, government officials, congress members to talk about usually political issues. |

I agree with Adventurer and most others on here. The show is totally scripted, so you have some 60 year old adjoeshi telling them what to say. It's basically a projection of what he wants to hear them say about how great Krean men are, Korea, etc. It's a joke, really! |

Korean media never portrays foreign men in a positive light. This show puts foreign women in a positive light for the pleasure of Korean men. Heaven forbid they ever develop a tv program with foreign men praising the virtues of Korean women.... |

Since this isn't the news, I'm going to assume you're talking about all TV shows, and there is a very popular drama on these days that has a western guy as a central character who is portrayed quite positively. |

I do not think this is because foreign men are seen as "better" and women are suitable for objectification. Rather, we are not eye candy to ajoshi program managers, and thus aren't good enough even to be objectified!
I do not think a program with western men making vapid, bland comments praising Korea would be very popular anyway. I'd rather see the girls, even if there's one screechy Italian girl who sounds like a Busan Fran Drescher. |
