I'll be heading to Cambodia for slightly under 2 weeks. I'll be around Siemp Riep, Battambang, P. Penh and S-ville/Kep coast area while I'm there.
Anybody have any great experiences they recommend? All I really hear about is Angkor wat, and I know there's more, I'd just rather hear recommendations from a fellow traveler! |

Other than the temples of Angkor, the best things about Cambodia for me was the experience of traveling there, more than any specific site. If the temples interest you get a 3-day pass and spend 2 of the days visiting the more remote temples. Many people spend only one day in PP seeing the Khmer Rouge sites, but I enjoyed spending a couple extra days wandering around the markets and soaking up the street life. Alternatively, if you ride you can rent a dirt bike and explore the more remote jungle provinces in the Northeast - but don't do this if you aren't an experienced biker. Haven't been to Battambang, but S'ville is a fun place to party on the beach - the beaches aren't as nice as in Thailand but they are far cheaper and have more of an anything goes attitude toward them. |

S'ville get a big two thumbs up. The Cambodians make a dish call Amok I couldn't get enough of. The souvenir stands have really really old souvenirs, it seem they were purchased 40 years ago and haven't been moving.
A zany USA college student on my bus ate a large fried spider from a road side food seller and had his bro video the event. Perhaps you too could eat a spider. |

I leave in just a few days nows, so I'll definitely give the dish of food a try, and probably a spider as well. Only live once right?
My motorbike skills aren't good enough to go off in search of adventure, but I'll hopefully get a chance to wander about some of towns. And I'll be spending new year's eve near S'ville, so hopefully a good time.
Thanks for the suggestions. |

I ate two! They really aren't bad at all; crunchy and garlicky. |

Wow, you're pretty zany! I thought if you just think of spiders as crabs since crabs really are water spiders but hey, they're spiders! Ick! Did you get a picture? |

Get on over to Kratie and check out the Irawaddy dolphins (before it's too late). |

There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer if that's your thing. You could research and write a story on why there are more Lexus SUVs in PP than any other place in the world! You could pay $200 and shoot a cow with a rocket. Hmm, so much to think about... |

Travelers are still warned not to roam PP at night, especially alone, but even in a group too. I was there in summer 2008 and it did feel a bit dodgy at times, but I never felt downright threatened. |

From what I understand, he was way too drunk/high and got pretty physical with some local 'gansters'/undercover police officers at Chivas Shack, a popular foreigners' beach bar in Sihanoukville, by taking offense that locals were there too, having a good time. The locals got po'd at his attitude and 'showed' him some 'respect', Khmer style.
It's much better than in the past, but DON'T mess w/the locals. Their lives are shitty enough without the barangs rubbing their face in it and they have way too many guns with too much time on their hands. |

Besides Ankor Wat, spent some time days in Phnom Penh.
A nice walking tour will take you by the palace and museums.
I visisted the "killing fields," a stark reminder to Cambodia's past, but it became too uncomfortable walking around the park, realizing what actually happened there.
Don't forget the Russian Market, a great place to get knock-off North Face backpacks or Nike running shoes. |

Go to the night market in Siem Reap. It has a Tiki bar in the center and a cool atmosphere |
