I don't know where you are getting this information that you can not buy a LPG new vehicle! Some people say that you have to have a disability. My wife and I were looking between the Carnival and the Kia Carens, both LPG and was told both was possible with out hesitation. We decided on the Carens due to road tax and toll tax. Plus the parking situation in Korea would make it easier with a smaller vehicle. We love it, has a third row of seats we never use it though. My wife and our two girls go all over korea and it is a perfect size for our family. If you have any questions about this car or LPG questions just PM me.
Take Care,

My wife and I have been using a Carens for two years and we love it. It's great how it's spacious but still economical and LPG is supposed to be lower emissions so I'm happy about that. |

I know for a fact that most LPG vehicles are only allowed for certain people, like elderly, disabled, and people of merit.
The Carens and Santa Fe are supposed to be acceptable for anyone to buy -- new or used Carens for sure. You have to be one of the special people to buy an LPG Sonata, for example.
I just wasn't sure about the Canival.
Also, have you guys running LPG noticed any drop in prices at the pump after the LPG gas companies were caught for colluding and price-fixing? |

Ok, the wife called Hyundai and got the answer:
If a car was sold as an LPG vehicle from new, then anyone can purchase and own it. If a car has been modified from regular gas to LPG, then only disabled, elderly, people of merit, taxi drivers, etc., can own one.
So it's perfectly OK for us to purchase a used LPG car, so long as it was originally produced that way.
Now for the bad news:
According to Hyundai, LPG cars have a bad reputation for being finicky in cold weather and not wanting to start. They said that newer cars are now "LPi" , which I assume means they follow an "injected" rather than a carb-based process. The problems with cold starting might explain why I seem to see more LPG cars sold down South from Busan and such (warmer there).
So... hmmm....might have to start looking at Diesel again...
Anyone with an LPG car want to weigh-in with any cold starting problems? Do you find it to be true? |

Bassexpander, I have had LPG vehicles for 5 years now in Korea and have never had a problem with the cold weather causing it not to start. With the new Kia there is a LPG button you push off during the cold nights to get the gas out of the line then push it back on in the morning. Never even had to use that. Seen -22 and forgot to push the button and the vehicle started in the first try. They are awesome. plus the road and toll taxes are low due to the size of the Carens and the fact that it is LPG the road tax gets you a discount. Overall, read many reports that this is a very solid vehicle in Korea and this has held true for me also. Never had a single problem.
Let me know if you have any more questions

My Carens starts first time in minus temperatures. Every time.......they still call the engines LPG, but I think they're all LPI now. |

I used to drive my Hyundai Grace in the bus lane. I have a K-friend in the printing business. He made some life size poster people on that corugated plastic material for me. I attached 10 of them to the head rests of the seats and plowed down the bus lanes! The van had tinted windows so it looked totally legit that I had 12 passengers in the van! Only once did a cop take chase but bailed when seeing the bobbing heads in the van. |

Something that nobody has mentioned here concerning the diesel vehicles.
Every 6 months, a diesel vehicle MUST go through an emissions test. There is an annual safety test they tack on too. Failure to do so results in fines and can add up quickly. The test is not expensive, but the test is inconvenient at times and one might forget, and then you have to pay for previously missed tests and the fine to get a new one and so on and so on. |

Every 6 months? THAT sucks.
Yearly would be bad enough!
Eamo, what year is your Carens? |

Oh yeah, the cameras. I forgot about how fun those were. Stories, stories. Here's a snippit of a good one.
Sunday afternoons and evenings. Returning from skiing, heading back to Suwon on the YougDong Expressway. Me and my Grace (van) doing 90+km/h in the inside shoulder with my hazard lights on and about 4 or 5 vehicles following as I lead the way past miles upon miles of bumper to bumper parked cars.
Oh good times! |

We called on a few 1999 and early 2000's model Carens and Carnivals.
Sure is hard to find a car that doesn't have damage or a problem. |

Are you after a manual or an automatic? At the time I bought my 2000 Carens in auto (it had had some damage that was repaired), there was a manual with no damage for w800,000 less!!! Unfortunately the better half won't drive a manual, and I was worried about being in a manual on the wrong side of the car/road.
Haven't had any problems, although what SK Encar stated as acceptable for the tyres and brakes didn't pass my assesment, so that was an extra w300,000.
I've only done 9000km since July but its been trouble free even on cold mornings.
I would prefer the space of the Carnival but parking it wouldn't be much fun.
Since the cartel was busted my gas has gone from w808/litre to w907/litre, although that may be more to do with the season, as LPG prices are higher in the Northern hemisperes winter (that's what I used to tell Australian motorists when I worked for a gas company back home).
I beilieve that diesel is more efficient than LPG and only w1,000 per litre so that could be the best choice, if you don't care about performance. |
