Arrrggggghhhhh.....
I have about 15 days left here, and this telling people stuff at the last minute has been bothering me 10x more than it usually does.
Two examples:
-Sunday I get a text message at 11:30 PM saying I have to be at work at 9:30 the next morning (we usually start at 2). This was only said once, in passing, about 2 weeks ago and wasn't mentioned at all Thursday before we left for the weekend.
-Tonight I get a text at 10:50 PM that says I need to let the landlord into my apartment tomorrow morning so he can show off the apartment to another couple. As I'm getting ready to leave in 2 weeks you can imagine that my apartment isn't in the best shape so I would prefer to clean it up before I have someone snooping through my stuff.
Is it a lack of respect for others that they don't tell people until the last minute? Or what? I have tried to rationalize this, but I simply can't. I'm gonna tell the landlord to shove it and he can come later in the week when I've had ample time to straighten up just a little bit. |

You can't even answer a question on this forum without saying it's the foreigner's fault or responsibility.
he asked about last minute notifications, you tell him to clean his apartment.
Screw the landlord! Keep the place like it is. You're moving/leaving the country. If they can't give you at least a few days notice that this stuff will be happening, that's on them.
If it's an issue of personal embarrassment, I'd clean it up, but as far as tomorrow goes, that's on them. |

It's not the 'foreigners fault or 'responsibility'. It's just the way it is in Korea. It's annoying when you live in an apartment and the landlord wants to rent it out. You have to be ready to expect a potential tenant wanting a look at pretty much any time from 9am-9pm. Completely unusual in the UK, where I come from, but completely usual here.
It's VERY convenient when you're looking for a house though. I love it when I'm house hunting and the real estate agent can take me IMMEDIATELY to every home in my price range. None of this making appointment in advance time wasting stuff. I love the fact that I can walk into a real estate office, tell them my price range, then see 6+ apartments/houses in the next hour. So convenient if you're a house hunter.
When I've lived in an apartment that was due to be rented I made sure to be 'ready' for it. It was always a stressful couple of weeks because you never knew when you'd get 'the call' and be told someone is coming to your house in 30 seconds time, but you learn to live with it. The benefits on the house hunting side outweigh the drawbacks of the tenant side. Unless of course you're just leaving the country and not house hunting yourself, and don't get the benefits of the system. That'd suck. |

Sorry kimchi girl...but in my world cleaning your appartment is your responsability. When you are about to move out of said appartment it is normal for visits to happen as the landlord needs to rent it. Case in point for ya: I own an appartment building. I have tenants in Canada. When one moves away he notifies me 5 months in advance. I then have to let him know the night before if I intend to have visits. Thats the way it is.....
This is not Korean vs Foreigner by the way...it is TENANT and LANDLORD. Look up what that means....
The tenant or occupant is responsible for cleaning his house...I know shocking!

You're so blessed to have tenants giving 5 months advance notice. My tenants in Canada are like English teachers in Korea. Wait untill the last minute to inform you about leaving when they have had it in their heads for months. Then quibble about every dime of the deposit that you owe them, arguing that it isn't their fault and so on.
Hmmm. Korean culture and Canadian culture just doesn't seem so different after all.
I have done my share of Apt hunting in Korea too. It is what it is. Unlike Canada, I am able to see 6+ places in the first hour and that's just plain awesome. Unlike Canada, renting/leasing (whatever you want to call it), letting an apartment you want to get rid of is just as easy and awesome.
I think the OP is under a lot of stress and just venting. Sucks that he's in a pickle. Lesson learned. Hope others have gleaned some wisdom from this post. |

I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning it. The potential renters will know the deal, and I'm sure the owner told them too.
A: "Oh, this place is currently being rented by a 23 year old single male, and he's a foreigner. So it's going to be messy."
B: "Hmmm, young single guys are usually messy. Okay, as long it's cheap." |

| Landlords not really going to even clean it when you leave anyway. Maybe give it a wipe or something. So screw it. |

Don't sweat it. When vacating an apartment and moving, Koreans dont clean the apartment. They leave it messy as to look occupied so evil spirits wont think its fine to move in.

Don't clean it. If he gives you such short notice, let him show the dirty apartment. Just don't keep anything valuable in plain sight.
His comeback will be to complain that you didn't clean. You can then tell him you would appreciate more notice next time.
Like a child touching a hot pan on a stove, the landlord will only do it once. |

Do NOT worry about cleaning up your place if you're in the middle of prepping for a move. Koreans don't grade the place based on current occupant cleanliness and organization. They're looking at the basics.
Believe me, in the courses of our many apartment hunts, we've seen places that've looked like bag lady conference storage facilities. No shame on the part of the current renters. |

Ok, I guess you don't have the full story. This isn't MY apartment, it's one rented through the school. And the school has made me to believe that the next person would be taking my apartment so I really never thought that I would have to keep my apartment in tip-top shape while I'm also scrambling to get everything packed to go home. Plus, I'll be at school at 11 AM so I don't really want people in my apartment while I'm not there and won't be there for another 5 hours. |
