Historians Against the War (HAW), a group of anti-war university professors, will soon be hosting an event in San Diego, CA. Intersingly, it will be held in solidarity with the LGBT and UNITE HERE for topics which include, well, absolutely nothing that have to do with war. It's more about the future and how "progressives" can help build a better future. David Beito explains:

Quote:
In 2003, Historians Against the War (HAW) seemed a promising opportunity to bring together antiwar historians of all political persuasions. And, in fact, many libertarian historians joined with liberals, socialists and others on the left to oppose the war. Such an ecumenical political organization had rarely appeared in American history since the demise of the American Anti-Imperialist League in the early twentieth century. Because of its openness, HAW received praise from such free market blogs as the Beacon of the Independent Institute, Antiwar.com, Scott Horton's The Stress Blog, LewRockwell.com Blog, and Liberty and Power at the History News Network. Seven years later, however, HAW has become essentially a left-wing social club with virtually no political effectiveness.

Ah yes, it's the last bastion of free thought, the university.

This has to do with the upcoming AHA conference in San Diego.

You have no idea how politically-charged it has become. They are not only using it as an opportunity to assert these kinds of politics; they are also intending to protest California's recent vote against same-sex marriage (I believe they wanted to boycott the hotel which hosts the conference because its ownership somehow contributed to the outcome); and they have also been wringing their hands for weeks now because hotel workers are apparently on strike, and they, as those who sympathize with the proletariat and stand against capital and management, do not believe they should cross the lines to attend the conference, etc., etc., etc.

Suffice it to say, those of us who do not share their politics have learned to keep our heads down, to say nothing, and to voice our views only anonymously, in such fora as this one, for example.

Gopher, should you earn tenure, will your head stay down?

About the OP, the hard-lefties alienate themselves when they cluster like that. If anything, it should be encouraged. Isolate them and then ridicule them.

I am learning the art of keeping one's head down. Post-tenure, I will continue keeping my head down. I still need peer-review for publications, for example.

I do not think you understand the balance of power within Academe, which they dominate. Ridicule them within the larger society, certainly. But in their bubble, they are gods.

The dominance of taboos, eh.

It is still ashame, though. Once you step into the realm of partisan politics, all critical reasoning vanishes. These people teach and research at universities throughout North America, even some of the elite universities. It was never about war for many on the left. The war was always a convenient pretext to hate W and the republicans.

It is much more than that, Pluto.

Quote:
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, most Sovietologists were caught flat-footed. With their lives' work based on the assumption of an enduring communist state, they were ill-prepared to offer explanations when V.I. Lenin's legacy went poof. Many American intellectuals find themselves similarly empty-handed after Sept. 11.

The fall of the twin towers shook the twin assumptions of a generation of scholarship: that America's relations with the Third World are essentially wicked and that our country's domestic history can only be understood as a continuing battle over race, class and gender. For more than 30 years, scholars on the cutting edge of academe have helped students learn how to identify where the U.S. fell short of its ideals, when it served only its economic interests and how it turned a blind eye to those crushed by its national ambitions.

Then came Sept. 11...[see link]

For many Democrats yes. Not for the Left in academia though. This conference is an example of that.

Actually, Catman, this conference is an example of this -- intrigue and hand-wringing re: California politics. Not sure how this relates to scholarly academic concerns and intellectual conferences. Glad to see the AHA resisted this and stood firm -- even if many of its individual members continue to throw tantrums.
