Below my apartment resides a person who watches TV pretty loudly until about 4.30am who then continues this TVathon from 6.30/7am.
Is there any chance in hell that I if I speak to the apartment management office that they will speak to him and he will maybe keep it down after 1am say? (It's only the 1am - 4.30 period that is really beginning to be a pain.)
Part of me thinks, damn, the guy's just watching TV in his own apartment, it's not his fault the walls are paper thin (I can actually hear the guy upstairs when he pees, the sound is so clear I feel like I'm getting a golden shower courtesy of poor Korean building standards.) but the other part of me is in a rage.
I know the answer, the answer is to relax and ignore it, but I'm just not succeeding. My GF can sleep soundly and it doesn't bother her at all! |

Oh man, I feel your pain. I have the exact same problem.
In my experience, and I've had many, Korean neighbors are very uncooperative. My guess is whatever you do, things will not get better and will perhaps get worse.
Sorry dude, but as I said, I'm in the same boat. With the TV and the peeing. And I paid over a half million US for this place. |

I'd drop in a note in Korean. He won't know it's from you. Maybe he/she is reasonable and will lower it a bit. If not you tried.

I think from the posts on here, loud neighbours are a usual occurrence. My neighbours above me are like fairy elephants. I have some ear plugs which definitely help.
Your neighbour probably falls asleep with the TV on after one too many sojus! |

Your problem would drive me crazy. It's a real problem cos its affecting your sleep and well being.
I'd take a punt and just spend 10,000 won on a set of headphones and leave them at his door (with the note as mentioned above). It's a sweet touch that might change the b*stards behavior. |

I can completely understand your problem. Completely. A few years back, the neighbor in my offictel would jack his/her tv non-stop until the early am hours. Lucky for me, I worked the afternoon shifts(it would have been a nightmare if I had to do mornings, ugh). Anyhow, I get really angry when I lack sleep. I yelled. I punched a hole in the wall. Got so angry that I shut their heat off during the night. So pissed. Finally, I had a note written in Korean and stuck it on the door. Never had a problem after that. The note was polite, told the problem. You might want to try that route. If not, earplugs would be your only choice. It sucks, but most walls in Korea are paper thin. |

Koreans don't like confrontation - get one of the K-teachers at your school to write a kind, but firm note in Korean. The guy won't know where it's coming from and may just abide to avoid any future confrontations with 'you' or building management... |

The place we're living in is about that... but we're renting.
Standard 3 bedroom apartment price in Seoul is around $400,000-$500,000 US. |

Chances are there's someone above or on the other side of him that he's trying to drown out. |

A clever idea. If well-written it might scare the guy quiet.
A few times on weekend afternoons I've heard porn coming from upstairs, about 3 times as loud as anyone but the near-deaf need it to be. Now who wants to let everyone know he's watching that? |

As my older brother would say, it doesn't hurt to try. Why don't you get a Korean teacher to write a very polite letter in Korean and say you appreciate he wants to watch TV, and you don't mean to bother him, but you would love it if he would lower the volume. |

Don't you mean $50,000 US dollars? That would be around 20,000 pounds.
Anyway, I second the note idea. If you live in a country with this high a population density and ultra low building standards, then you should really be thinking about your neighbours more.
This is why I always wear headphones (the kind that sound great and don't emit any external noise). |

No, it's not a typo. A three-bedroom apartment in a nice area of Seoul costs something like $500,000. If it's in Apgujeong, it probably costs a million. That is just how expensive Seoul real estate is.
In parts of the US you can get a gigantic mansion of a house for that sum of money. |

I live in the smallest apartment in my apartment complex(which is very nice). The 50 pyeong apartments are 1.8 million dollars. My apartment is a studio and 400,000 to buy. 500,000 for a 3 bedroom apartment is CHEAP. |
