They generally pay a bit higher than hagwon gigs, but provide no housing even if they say they do.
From what I can gather, after school programs are run out of public schools, but a 3rd party is usually involved and more then often use a bank scam to hide their earnings from the government. I think they have a reputation for being even more shady than hagwons. |
You are exactly right. I worked for one for 5 years. They do scam through a bank to avoid paying any taxes, but if you go to work for them...now you know this and you can use that knowledge as leverage. I pulled that card a couple times. They might be more shady, but, if you do your job and keep your student numbers up, it is a breeze job. No one breathing down your neck. The principal at the school basically could care less what happens in the program as long as the school is getting paid. VERY short hours. No office time administrative crap, or very little. Freedom to teach how you want. However, be prepared for no one in the school to speak English (it is a possibility - in 5 years at my school I did not meet one teacher that could speak English well enough to have a conversation...I got by with my broken Korean!), including students. The first graders usually, not always, but usually don't speak any English and will flood the air with questions in Korean everyday. You need to be able to understand what they are saying. If you have experience teaching in Korea, this is a great job as far as salary/time goes. |

I was just hired by these guys (Korea After School Education) to work at a public school in Seoul.
My undertstanding is that the hours are from 12 -5, and I only have to teach 5 classes a day.
It seems like a really sweet gig, but they told me the last teacher was let go because he shot a bb gun at one of his students'. I find that somewhat hard to believe.
Does anybody know anything about these guys? I finally got out of hagwon hell, and want to make sure I know what I am getting myself into. Would appreciate it. |
