I've recently taken a job at an elementary school in Hwaseong (Seoshin). Does anyone have any information they can give me about this area such as general living, nightlife, sights, etc. Any sort of description would be reimbursed with much good karma. Thanks in advance.

I work in Hwaseong... It can vary greatly from built up areas on the outskirts of Suwon, to rice paddies and one horse 'towns'...

I actually don't know where Seoshin is... So I checked on naver...

Seoshin is right on the west coast by Jebu (NOT Jeju) Island. Been in that area once, it's pretty quiet and definitly a small town, not much action there. You'll be about an hour from Suwon by bus (and I'm not sure if there is a direct bus to Seoul....but if there is, it'd be about 100minutes or so). Some parts are quiet pretty, and there is a bit of action at the Marina, if you are outdoorsy, might be good.

Some nice things generally: You'll definitly be classified as rural, so you'll earn an extra 100K/month and get 5 bonus days vacation.

The Hwaseong education office is pretty good all round. They have liasons who sort problems out (which is usually enough of a deterrent to avoid problems), and the honcho (who has real clout with the schools) is very supportive of native English teachers. They also organise the odd excursion - last Friday they took us to the DMZ, all paid for, lunch included. On a school day

All in all it's a good call. Only thing i'd be worried about is you are definitly out in the sticks.

Thanks for the information. I am a bit of an outdoorsman so I think the sticks will suit me just fine, especially if I'm just a short bus ride from Suwon.

As a first-timer, hearing that the Hwaseong education office is very NET friendly gives me great reassurance. Thanks for that.

About Seoshin, it is a rural area surrounded by plenty of fields and actually the place is beautiful naturally. One of attractive place to visit is Jebu-do called Moses' small miracles for it happens twice a day.

Bus Info - part 1
Seoshin <-> Jebu-do
(1) go to 37041 bus stop (close to Seoshin Hanaro Mart and Seoshin Drugstore) called 'Mehwa-ri'
(2) take #330, 1004, 1000 (availalbe every 15-30 min')
(3) get off Jebudo Ikgu(means enterence) 11th bus stop from Mehwa-ri (Seoshin)
total requested time: 12min~15min

Bus Info - part 2
Seoshin <-> Suwon Sta'
(1) go to 37045 bus stop (called Seoshin Bus Terminal)
(2) take #1004, 990, 400, 400-1 (available every 15~30min)
(3) get off Suwon sta' (AK department store)
total requsted time: 66 min'

Mvan, I'd say you're gonna have no luck with that.
But there'll definitly be something like that in Suwon. I'm sure I've seen a Gym/Dojo along those lines by Suwon Station, which depending where you are in Hwaseong, can be anything from 15mins to 1hour 20mins away.

Best thing about the area is you will be able to eat all the Sashimi that you can handle. Being right on the coast is pretty awesome. It might seem pretty boring. My advice is to buy a used car for a couple mil won and drive yourself around. With a car that area is absolutely beautiful. If you are into photography, there are tons of great locations for photoshoots.
