Korea Slides 10 Notches in Quality of Life Survey

Korea ranked 42nd among 194 countries in terms of quality of life this year in rankings by U.S. magazine International Living. That is a slide of 10 notches from 32nd last year.

France topped the list in the magazine's annual quality of life index for 2010, followed by Australia, Switzerland, Germany, and New Zealand. Somalia ranked lowest at 194th, with Yemen and Sudan tied for 192nd.

The magazine gave a total score to each country based on points in nine categories: cost of living, culture and leisure, the economy, environment, freedom, safety and risk, health, infrastructure, and climate.

The magazine said it evaluated each country based on the UNESCO annual report, WHO reports, data from the U.S. State Department, and research and survey results from Freedom House.

In terms of cost of living, Korea ranked on a par with Nordic countries like Norway and Finland, which are notorious for their keen consumer prices.

Wondering what countries are surrounding Korea's 42nd ranking. Who was 40, 41, 43, 44 and 45. If it's countries like Canada, Spain, Norway, Scotland, I'll give the survey some credit. But if it's countries like Cambodia, Haiti and Columbia, I'd consider it garbage.

Korea is more free than the US.

You can walk down the street intoxicated, urinate in public, or ignore traffic regulations without being arrested.

America where? Laughing

Yeah, but try to understand what has been measured.

How would you measure 'freedom'? Will it measure across all countries?

Incarceration rate? Death penalty? Length of sentence for given crime?

You know, if you stop and think about what is being measured, it is spot on.

As opposed to measuring how American's perceive their amount of freedom based on their own subject internal measures.

I now understand how a Korean mother feels when she sees her child's test results.

No way my country receives a 62 on environment. What are they basing that on? The average for the top 30 or so countries is 75-80. My country deserves that score to, we were confused or we didn't understand the question. It was too ambiguous. Bump us to an 80 on environment so we can jump ahead of three more countries.

For reals...
Ryan

Edit: The final score difference between France and South Korea is only 13 points. Doesn't seem like that big a gap.
