Again its just more dividing between gyopos and other NETs. But I guess we're all on the same side aren't we?

We wish. We dont see eye to eye and you know it.
One of the other problems that must be brought up is the fact that kyopos and Korean teachers blame foreign teachers for the actions of hagwons and schools. They refuse to place the proper blame on the shady hagwon owners and the bad Principals in public schools for blatantly racist hirings and other rotten employment-related practices.

You should acknowledge that the OP is totally correct about Yeosu public schools and that no one should accept a position there. That means no one of any race or national origin. Thatll be the proper place to start.

Post like this about schools who are racist and won't hire non-whites.... yet we hear so often about floods of Filipinos and Indians coming and "stealing our jobs" when the Koreans hire them at half our pay.

I just found it to be an interesting contrast.

Hi guys,
I hope this doesn't seem too deperate! I've got a TESOL certificate but had a rough first year start in Mexico/Nicaragua. A good working career outside of this and genuinely want to work in the field....

I was curious about working in Southern Korea as I would prefer being in warmer weather.

A couple of questions - can anyone recommend a hagwon or other school to work in in Southern Korea and how much if any trouble will I have getting hired as an "older" worker (I'm 50, worked in much harder conditions in Nicaragua/Mexico but have some concern I'm not getting looked at due to my age......

Anyone currently looking? I see a sslightly vague hagwon ad by a Matt Raby in your area via esljobfeed.

Any thoughts on Southern, S. Korea are greatly appreciated. I'm also interested in what cultural differences you notice in the southern part of the country. Thanks for any feedback.

Are you white?

If so, then you're hijacking this thread.

It's about the trouble with getting hired if you're not Caucasian.

If you're white and 50, you're still highly marketable, but I wouldn't focus on Yeosu.

This is very sad but it is also true. I have heard about this from friends in Yeosu.

Yeosu public schools need to be boycotted.

I think it is sad that more people do not seem to be outraged about his.

An individual hogwon owner or principal exercising a preference is one thing. An official public school district policy, THAT is unacceptable in a developed country in 2010. Shame on YEOSU!!!

Not all Korean schools are run by cheaters, no matter what the posters say.

Besides, I don't think anyone should teach in Yeosu if Korean teachers are also being cheated, not just NETs.

It's bad all around- It's bad that Ks are discriminating against no-whites, it's bad that by and large this issue is getting ignored.

I guess some out there don't care.

The good jobs in Yeosu are limited.

Many of the teachers who live there just accept the nickel and dime rip offs that routinely happen at the relatively small number of academies there. They look at their friends and think, "Well at least I'm getting paid."

The academy owners look at each other and think, "Well I'm not rippin off my employees as badly as so and so. I'm a good guy..."

Admittedly, it's a wonderful little city to live in, but you need a pretty thick skin and a "I could care less about money" attitude to stomach some of the stuff that you're likely to encounter there.

The OP had the right idea. If you don't like the hiring practices, then don't apply for a job there.

However, this should NOT be done to bring about any social change in Korea. We are foreigners. This is not our country. It is not our place to come in and impose our morality on them. Attitudes like that simply re-enforce the stereotypes that many Koreans have about Westerners.

If you don't like the way things are done in Korea, then don't apply for a job there. Don't move there and then expect them to instantly reinvent their culture to what you think it should be.

This is not in any way supporting their racism. It is just a suggestion to let Koreans change Korean culture. Suggesting that we as foreigners should change Korea to make it better is just condescending.
