In 1990, about 48,000 Koreans visited Canada. The number had more than tripled by 2000, reaching 150,000 a year. The number of Canadian visitors to Korea in 2000 reached 56,300, an increase of 22% over the number of visitors in 1998, making Korea one of the fastest growing destinations in Asia for Canadians.

Academic relations have also blossomed in the past few years. The number of Korean students pursuing studies in Canada has risen from 828 in 1993 to 30,486 in 2000. In return, more than 1,000 Canadian English teachers are invited to Korea every year to work in the public school system and in private educational institutions.

More than 9,000 Koreans immigrated to Canada annually during the period of 1999-2000. In the year 2000, 9,295 Koreans entered Canada, representing 4.2% of the total number of immigrants accepted to Canada for that year. Although the number drastically dropped to 5,696 in 2001, the attraction of Canada as an immigration destination for Koreans will not fade in the near future.

As of December 2000, the Korean community in Canada, totalling 140,896, was largely concentrated in three major urban centres. About 80,000 Koreans live in Ontario, most of them in the Toronto area. About 50,000 Koreans have settled in Vancouver, British Columbia and Alberta. There are about 3,000 Koreans in Montreal and about 1,300 Koreans in the Ottawa capital region.

Diplomatic Relations between Canada and Korea
Canada and Korea exchanged over 200,000 visitors in 2002. Korea welcomes thousands of Canadian English teachers, each year and in Canada, there are over 200,000 Koreans, making a new home for their families, or choosing to study here. They are an indelible part of the cultural mosaic that is synonymous with the Canadian identity.

The number of foreigners in Korea surpassed 500,000 in fall 2000, including 154,000 Chinese; 87,000 US citizens; 40,000 Japanese; and 25,000 Taiwanese. The Justice Ministry reported that there were 172,501 illegal foreigners in Korea in 2000, up from 135,300 in 1999; half were Chinese, followed by eight percent Bangladeshi, seven percent Mongolian, and seven percent each Filipino and Thai.

Talks on the relocation of some 37,000 US troops stationed in South Korea under a mutual defense pact dating back to the 1950-53 Korean War began in December 2002.
