Has anyone any experience of this? I am going to be in SE Asia prior to taking up a teaching position at the end of Feb. Do they care where you have your interview and process your visa as long as you inform them in advance? They probably do, don't they? |

I am pretty sure the interview has to be in your home country. Plus in bigger countries it has to be at the consulate that is from where you are from. So if you lived in Toronto and you wanted to get your interview from Vancouver - no go.
Still I think you can get and apply for E-2 from any Korean consulate if you have done you first year (first year interview) and you have no previous troubles with immigration. |

Its not my first E-2 visa, but my last one was from Osaka maybe 14 months ago for which I didn't need some stupid "whats your name" interview for? I take it the visa run to japan is over? Hmmm need to think about this. |

I hope someone has a solid answer for this because I am in a similar situation. I left Korea a few months ago and have not gone back to my home country. I dont want to fly back, either, because I am already starting to run out of money.
But I was told by a recruiter that immigration is making people return to their home countries for an interview (even if they have had E2s previously) if they are not re-applying for the new E2 from inside Korea.
I really hope he is wrong. |

I just found this;

Note
If you are coming from a country outside Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States (if you had been teaching somewhere else, vacationing, etc.), you may need to follow a slightly varied process. In this case, ask your ThinkOutside representative and they will lead you in the right direction |
So it could be possible? It will be painful though...
Whats the visa situation like for Japan/Taiwan? This difficult? |

If it's not your first E-2, you should be able to get it at any Korean consulate or embassy. My girlfriend and I were in Bangkok last spring and were all set up to get our 2nd E2 processed there (after finishing our first year here). We spoke to the embassy several times to double check and they knew exactly what to do with us. We had everything with us; CBC, degree, signed health statements, etc.
However, we ended up flying back to the U.S. and just took care of it in San Francisco since our job got pushed back by a month. |

Thanks for the response.
So you didnt need to fly back for the interview, you did it voluntarily? Did you do an interview in the US?
Also, is it ok to just bring all the documents to the Bangkok embassy, or did they need to actually be sent to Korea? |

My understanding is that they still need to be sent the the ROK. It would be a lot better (cheaper) if you could take them to the Bkk embassy. I am talking to a recruiter tomorrow and will ask but I think they will give the answer that makes things easier for them rather than easier for the potential employee. |

Correct. You need to send the required documents, Apostilled criminal background check, diplommia, sealed transcripts, etc., to South Korea for processing.
Once your visa is approved from Korean immigration, they will give you/your school a Visa Issuance Number.
You take this number, your passport, and some other stuff, like transcripts, health statement, etc., to the consulate or embassy and they issue a visa after a day or a few (San Francisco was a few days).
For first time E2's, I'm pretty sure you still have to do the interview in your home country, but perhaps you could contact the closest embassy and explain the situation and find a way around it.
For 2nd time E2's, after South Korea immigration gives you the Visa Issuance Number, you should be able to get your visa in your passport from ANY embassy or consulate. (***I don't know if they've changed this again, I'm basing this on what we went through last spring/summer***)
Hope that helps. |

Gnawbert - in principle I am sure you are spot on, I will check. It would just be painful to be in SE asia having sent Doc's to the Korea embassy in London only to find out you cannot pop down to the embassy in Bkk for the paperwork? Although with Korea nothing comes as a surprise.
Surely with all the teachers in Korea and posting on this site somebody must have gone through this process? You think... |
