iPhone is stupid in that regard. You must always sync and activate with your main computer first, then you can add stuff to the iPhone. The SHOW sales people figured that it would merge (which it should) but iPhone doesn't. Apple has a way of doing it (in case your main syncing computer breaks) but there's no reliable easy public method to do it.

you can still buy music with iTunes on the iPhone. One can also sync wirelessly with MobileMe.

PostPosted: Mon Jan 11, 2010 1:39 am    Post subject: Need iPhone Plan Advice Reply with quote

I have a Korean friend who is going to sign me and my wife up for an iPhone under his name later today, but I am trying to figure out whether we should go for the iLight or iMedium plan, and I would appreciate hearing from those who have been using one or the other.

My wife and I both use about 300-400 minutes of talk time a month. Probably half of that is calling each other.

I send an average of 5 messages a day (150/month) and she sends probably about 500 a month.

We are used to using our iPod Touches for browsing at WiFi cafes and would probably be using the 3G data for the map app, email and occasional Google searches.

I guess I have three questions, really:

1. For those of you with experience, which would you go with if you were me?

2. What are the overage costs for voice, text and data?

3. Does anyone know if SHOW will allow you to sign up for the NESPOT access like with the iPod Touch? That could also help minimize the data usage if so.

Any insight on these points would be greatly appreciated.

First I would ask yourself if you have an iPhone, whether you would really go to an internet cafe to find wifi.

I have the iPremium plan which is supposed to be for 3GB. I have not even used 1GB yet and I use the internet all the time. So for you, maybe the lowest plan is ok. But, I really don't see how 5 texts per days is enough. Just in one quick conversation 5 texts can be sent. Remember that with the iPhone, the texts are in linear order so it looks like a conversation and one is more likely to send quick answers back and forth.

Thanks for the feedback. I did end up signing up for the iLite plan after all. Once I found out that could change my price plan up to three times in two years, I figured it was a no-brainer. We will try this plan for a month, and if we find we go over we will just upgrade to the iMedium.

We've been using our iPod Touches for almost two years relying on free hot spots, so when I read that the subscription included free NESPOT service I figured we could make it work for sure.

Yeah, my wife uses text messages a lot, but I'm just not that into it really. Some days I might send ten, but other days not at all. Should work fine. We will just pay for her overages.

Thanks again. I hope this info will help other people on the fence too. I will try to stop back by and report on our first month or two of usage.

Anyone having trouble connecting to the wifi at their school. Mine shows the network and I can connect to it but it's like I'm not connected because I can't go on the internet... it times out or whatever. Your thoughts? Solutions would be greatly appreciated. NOthing seems to be working.

Cnet is sourcing the Korea Times for information on technology products?

The KT must have done some amazing tech reporter hiring just recently if they're breaking this story globally haha.

I'm planning on getting an iphone in 3 weeks though.. if any more similar rumours come out I might just have to wait though.

I know what will happen.

Iphone 4G will come out. There will be a lot of problems with it. So, 2 months later, Apple will release a 4.5G which will have features the 4G didn't have, angering a lot of people who rushed to buy the 4G.

iPhone 4G with a removable battery? And Apple will let corporate customers have it first? Not likely. Most sites have declared the rumour as totally false, possibly as part of a smear campaign funded by Samsung and LG.

For those interested in Jailbreaking, but who are waiting for a untethered jailbreak, I just wanted to let you know of a bit of information that you may not be aware of.

If you want to ensure that your phone is jailbreakable in the future, you need to save your phones ECID SHSH Blob file and store it either on your computer, or on cydias servers. This can be done easily if you jailbreak with blackra1n for now ,and click "make my life easier" when you run cydia for the first time.

Saving the file locally on your computer (without using blackra1n) is possible with a program called umbrella if you want to do it that way.

Some of you may wonder why you may need to do this. With the iphone 3gs apple has made it so that when a new version of firmware is released, your are unable to restore to any previous version. When you do a restore itunes contacts apples servers to get authorization to install firmware. So if a untethered jailbreak comes out for 3.1.2 after a new version of the firmware comes out, you won't be able to install 3.1.2 anymore (apple won't sign it).

What saving this file does is it enables you to continue restoring to 3.1.2 of the firmware even after the next firmware is released. (it has to do with verification and digital signing from apples servers).

I'm not going to explain the whole process here, but its easily searchable on google. So if your waiting for an untethered jailbreak, i recommend you try saving your ECID SHSH file now while you still can to ensure you can still downgrade(or restore) to 3.1.2 in the future.

For everyone who was disappointed that the "Find my iPhone" Feature was disabled in Korea, well I have good news. I did some poking around with the phone and I discovered a way to re-enable it. I had a buddy of mine post the info on how to do it on his blog.
Works with iphones even if they haven't been jailbroken.
And if you don't know, this is the GPS location service for if you lose your phone.

You can read about it here:
