Some of you may remember that the MobilMe function "Find My Iphone" didn't work with Korean iPhones. Well after playing around with it a bit I figured out how to re-enable it. It doesn't require a jailbreak, it will work with any phone.

A buddy of mine was kind enough to post the information on how to do it on his blog:
http://pk.funnyseoul.com/2010/01/find-my-iphone-in-korea/

Oh and in case you don't know what this is, its the feature that allows you to find your iphone using a computer in case you lose it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE (8/6/2010):

Well I'm not sure how many people use the "findMyIphone" feature of mobileME, but I updated the carrier file to work with iOS4.

The thing is tho that it now requires a jailbroken phone. The reason for this is that any carrier update installed directly on the phone through FTP, or over the air takes precedence over carrier files installed through iTunes. If you install through iTunes the iphone will keep bugging you about once a week, or everytime you plug it in to your computer that a new carrier file is available.

So anyways installing through cydia is now the better method, as it will make the phone think you installed it over the air.

Here are the current steps:

1. To install the carrier update go into Cydia on your jailbroken phone
2. Go to the section labeled "Carrier Bundles".
3. select the KTF Korea Carrier Bundle (by aphase).
4. Install, and it should work

I haven't tested it out with MobileMe yet, because I ironically don't have a MobileMe account yet, but since I made the carrier file exactly the same way I made the previous ones, it should work.

For anyone who installs it through Cydia, please confirm that it worked for you in this thread.

Also, for un-jailbroken phones, the previous carrier update I listed in the past will still work, but itunes or your phone might bug you once inawhile that a new carrier bundle is available (even tho its pretty much the same). Just ignore the message and it'll work.

I'm somewhat hesitant to try this, but oh well. I could not get the windows version of code to work in command promt. I'd copy and paste the code and receive an error.

Don't worry, it won't break anything. The only thing thats changed in the file is the part about the FINDMYIPHONE feature.

People that have been using ATT in the states have been editing their carrier files for things like enabling MMS before ATT officially rolled it out.

I use a Mac, so that windows line i wrote down may be wrong. Maybe try:
"%ProgramFiles%\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

Let me know if that command works.

EDIT: I just double-checked online and that first command should have worked. Did you make sure to include the first quotation mark in the beginning of the command?

Also, if you use 64 bit windows, the command would be:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

Thanks, the "%" code worked fine. I was very interested in MobileMe until I found out it costs $100 a year. It may be worth it for some, but I dont own a Mac. Great job finding the loophole, though

Thanks for the info, but my 3Gs didn't accept the edited .ipcc file.
First of all, triggering the update, caused iTunes to automatically download the file from it's own source. There was no option to use your friend's file.

Sidenote:
The .ipcc file should be stored in: /Users/[Username]/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/

I ended up just dropping your friend's .ipcc file there before restarting iTunes and the iPhone.

After pasting the command in terminal, launching iTunes, and turning my phone back on, there was still no "Find my iPhone" function.

Any advice?

It should accept it. Did you make sure you hold down the "Option" key on the keyboard (if your on a mac) or "Shift" on windows as you clicked on "Check for Updates" in itunes? If so, then instead of downloading from itunes, it should open up a box where you can select the file downloaded from that blog.

Simply dropping the file in:
/Users/[Username]/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/
won't work, because that version of the ipcc file will be already installed on your iphone.

Try holding down the key (either option, or shift depending on your OS) and selecting the edited file.

The "Find my iPhone" switch will be visible on your iphone in MobileMe settings which is located in Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/****@me.com AFTER you set up your mobileME account on your iphone.

If anyone did this successfully besides me, post your results here so we can have confirmation its working for other people.

I see what i did wrong. I selected "check for updates" from the iTunes drop down menu.
I SHOULD HAVE selected it from my iPhone "Summary" window (in iTunes).

IT IS NOW WORKING !!!!! Thanks for the help.

side note:
You can replace the official carrier update file with the edited file, press 'option' key + 'check for updates' button in the iphone summary window, select the edited .ipcc file, enter the terminal command, restart iTunes and the phone, and it will still work.

Thanks for this. I can verify that it works perfectly and was easy to accomplish on a Mac when following the instructions.

I was disappointed that this feature was not enabled from the start, especially since I am paying for MobileMe, but all is good now. The toggle switch is present in the iPhone settings and when I log into MobileMe online, it shows the location of my phone.

Do you know what is involved for future updates. I know that you have to change the .ipcc extension to .zip to modify it, but do you know which string in which file is modified, just in case a new carrier update comes out. It might help all of us keep the feature as new updates are released.

to find out information on editing ipcc files i found the information at this site:
http://www.macworld.com/article/143088/2009/10/carriersettings.html

I don't how easy it is for Windows users to edit the ipcc files themselves, but on a mac its fairly easy. If you have Xcode installed (which is free with all OS X installtions) you will have a copy of Property List Editor installed. Property List Editor is used to edit the plist files found within the ipcc file when you decompress it. It's located in
/Developer/Applications/Utilities

The string for DisableFindMyIphone is very easy to find, as its listed as such in carrier.plist. It has a check box next to it. Simply uncheck it and save, and then recompress the file, and change the extension back to .ipcc

I wouldn't edit anything else in the plist files though unless you know what you are doing, because some of those settings can be important to have your phone work with KTF correctly.

When new versions of the carrier file become available, i'll be happy to provide future edited versions for the people who aren't confident doing themselves.

Anyways, I doubt the carrier file will be updated many times.

So you still need to buy a MobileMe account in order to use this mod, right?

I'd like to be able to track my phone without having a MobileMe account. Possible?

As far as i know you need to have a mobileme account. I'm currently just using the 60 day free trial to see how much i like it. It's got a lot of features i like tho, such as idrive etc, which works well with my macbook, so i might end up keeping it.

MobileMe is terrific..
Yesterday, through my work office router, and my home router, i was able to connect from my laptop to my SLEEPING desktop computer, grab files from it and share the screen with it. This was done using the "back to my mac" feature with absolutely no port forwarding, or similar preparations. I just clicked the icon in the sidebar and it connected. I had my doubts about it waking up, but it did.
It was great to remotely control my torrent transfers through screen sharing.

File transfer was faster this way, than from the iDisk.

Also, not only can you sync your iDisk, but having all my calendars, emails, contacts,, to do lists, sync through my phone as well as my 2 computers saves a lot of work.

Since I work on both computers at different times, producing music, I can make sure I am always working on the latest edit, no matter what computer I'm on.

Just some additional information, if you upgrade your firmware, or if you do an iphone restore for whatever reason, it will remove the edited carrier file and replace it with the standard one. All you have to do though is repeat the steps of getting the edited carrier file on there, and then everything is good again.

I recently did an iphone software restore, which is how i found out.

I suspected that would happen. I archived the edited .ipcc file in case an Apple update overwrites it. Keep in mind, that edited .ipcc file will only be good until another carrier update comes out.
