For those not up to speed on eco-terrorism in my home province, Wiebo Ludwig is the leader of a small Christian sect who served time in the early '00s for blowing up oil and gas installations in northern Alberta. Basically, imagine your right-wing American Christian militia types, only with an eco agenda thrown into the mix, and you've got this guy.
Anyway, Ludwig's been out of jail for a while now, but last week the Mounties arrested Ludwig in connection with some eco-sabotage that had been taking place in neighbouring BC. However, he was subsequently released without charge.
A University Of Alberta professor speculates on the Mounties' motivations...

EDMONTON -- The upcoming Vancouver Winter Olympics may have prompted the mysterious arrest of Wiebo Ludwig and the ongoing search of his Trickle Creek property, an eco-terrorist expert said yesterday. |

"When I first heard that it was only a charge of extortion, that in itself made me think that they don't have any real evidence that links to the bombings themselves," said Paul Joosse, eco-terrorist expert at the University of Alberta.
"The larger timeline that's a factor here is you've got the Olympics happening next month," Joosse said.
