When I was younger I preferred cheap western food to expensive western food, but now I enjoy the expensive food more (as long as I don't have to pay). If the Koreans truly enjoy the expensive food more, it could be something similar. |
Yeah I remember when I was a kid I thought that MacDonald's hamburgers and Spaghetti-O's were the greatest foods available ... of course your tastes change as you get older or get used to certain things.
Personally, I love bibimbap and eat it at least twice a week. But I don't see the big deal, this guy doesn't like bibimbap ... he's entitled to his opinion. |
The ridiculous part is that he never said he doesn't like the dish. In an interview he was quoted as saying he really likes bi-bim-bap, but the point of his article was to say that Korea has other foods that could represent 'korean cuisine' better. Sometimes I think there are too many people in this country that are incapable of understanding what they read...
Just so we are clear, that's not aimed at you. It's aimed toward all the idiots in this country that got mad and started calling him with death threats over a type of food.. What a bunch of children.. |

Children? Most would call them idiots, and cowards, too. |

Yeah it's mixing the patbingsu that I really don't get. Why would you take a perfectly good sno-cone sundae covered with fruit and red bean, and mash it up until it becomes just a bowl of cold water with chunks floating in it? |
Actually, the filipinos have a very similar dessert. |
I've never had halo-halo that turns into cold water. I dunno how they do it, but they do. They also don't add corn flakes which go totally soggy in 10 seconds flat. |
Perhaps, I should have just said, "same same but different". |

I don't know what their problem is, but mixing foods together produces amazing results.
I mean, anyone who has not yet eaten a bowl of mashed potatoes mixed with corn has not yet lived. |

You are talking about his subsequent editorial in response to the "criticisms" against his original column on bibimbop, which doesn't really contain what you mentioned. As far as I can tell from the inside, Koreans are more than fine with legitimate criticisms with proper reasoning as many are well aware of their social problems (what do you think the Korean media is reporting all the time? Korea No. 1?) but not so much with the remarks they perceive as arrogant or derogatory. They can express their dissatisfaction sans death threats in whatever form although it would be much better to just laugh it off. The context is that Kuroda is a well-known right-wing figure in Korea who writes for Sankei. He has had his share of haters for his snide remarks. I think Korean readers tend to give him too much credit making him more important than he should be. |
