How many countries can you name in five minutes?

I have done this three times and the last two times I named 86. You can approach it systematically -- by regions, by continents, by languages, by wars, whatever. I go across the Near East, then East Asia, then Australia and New Zealand, then up the western hemisphere and the Caribbean, then across to western Eurasia, then across North Africa into subSaharan Africa. I draw a blank in Central Asia and the Persian Gulf (the emirates).

For those who might need assuagement: "Israel" and "Palestine" both count as countries here, so chill, just enjoy the game. Wink

Bah, 85.

Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Chad, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Jordan, Laos, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Myanmar, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, North Korea, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Somalia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Thailand, Tobago, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City, Venezuela, Yemen, Zimbabwe

Wish there was a blank political map on the page. It's easier to think of these things with a visual aid; now that I'm done I'm remembing some really obvious ones I missed, like Egypt. Razz

I got 66 first time. Did it by association mostly. Went regional first and also tried to do short countries. I'll try it again in a bit.

"Vatican CITY!," Fox. I kept writing "Vatican" and did not understand why it did not accept it.

Fourth time: 91. I doubt I will ever get much higher than that. "British Antarctic Territory" is "a country?" Strange.

I will not be able to spell the -stans correctly or internalize subSaharan Africa without major study, let alone all the minor island countries I never learned.

Sporcle is good for these type of games, has a decent geography section too.

From the same site you can find out who died on your birthday. On my exact birthday, year and day, Zarah Leander died, a Swedish actress and singer who I've never heard of. The only people I've heard of who died on my birthday in other years was Aaron Spelling and Vespasian (the Roman Emperor).

101 first try.

Basically you have to keep your eyes on the keyboard and not look up to check your spelling.

Someone should also tell the maker that the following are not recognised countries:

Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Northern Cyprus, Pridnestrovie, Somaliland, South Ossetia, Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Mayotte, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Wallis and Futuna, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Clipperton Island, Bouvet Island, Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Anguilla, Bermuda, Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena, South Georgia, Turks and Caicos Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Baker Island, Guam, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Palmyra Atoll, U.S. Virgin Islands, Wake Island, Hong Kong, Macau, Faroe Islands, Greenland, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Reunion, Aland, Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, Svalbard, Ascension, Tristan da Cunha, Antarctica, Palestine, Western Sahara, Australian Antarctic Territory, Ross Dependency, Peter I Island, Queen Maud Land, British Antarctic Territory,

Bah 76 the first run through. I was surprised it took Abkhazia. Of course unless you are truly geographically challenged, this game is more a test of typing speed and spelling than geographic knowledge. I Kept getting hung up on spelling.

What, no Principality of Sealand??? What gives?

It also wouldn't accept Trinidad and Tobago (but for some reason considers each island to be a separate country). Then it wouldn't accept the island Nevis (in the Caribbean), as it has to be "Saint Kitts and Nevis"... a tad buggy if you ask me Confused
