I'm thinking about taking this next year off to be near family and friends in the US. During that time I'd like to maybe do an online MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics. I'd like to find an inexpensive program though because I'll be studying full-time and hopefully not working at all. The goal is to pay for the degree outright while living rent free and spending under $200 a month on food, entertainment, etc.

( I have at least one other posting similar to this but I think I may have given it a misleading title and as a result it sidetracked pretty quickly. )

I am very interested in this as well. I do seem to find on line MA's but they are very expensive. Any help on this subject would be very apperciated as well.

I haven't found a "cheap" MA in TESOL either. They don't exist in the US. I haven't researched other countries though. Online programs aren't always cheaper. When I went for my MA, online courses at my university were more expensive than campus courses.

But what do you consider "cheap?"

I recommend either the University of New England in NSW, Australia, or Macquarie University in Sydney. Both are accredited brick-and-mortar universities offering well recognized degree. Cost at both is 12 million for the MA.

If you are going home, why would you want to do an online program? By going to a grad school in person you get access to grants and TA/RA jobs that online people don't. This lowers the price of tuition significantly.

Also, what's with all the "I need to do it cheap" people on Dave's lately? If you are going to make a career of something, think of it as an investment.

As anyone who has a degree in business will tell you; higher price != better.
It's a value proposition.

There are some mega-cheap places in the US now that are accredited and highly rated. (hint: University of Phoenix is not one of them)

This is so incredibly untrue! Don't get ripped off, and whatever you do, don't go into debt. My M.A. cost me $3,500. My co-worker's costed him $50,000. (We have the same job and the same salary).
Mr. Green
I have heard decent things about the schools in OZ/NZ.

Higher price = better. That's K-logic.

Like what? The cheapest I've found is still over 10k. That was U. of Missouri. I guess 'cheap' for America, but still seems more than other countries.

$50,000 for an MA?

Here is my take on that: if you go to a school like Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, Standford, and the like, you will:

- get interviews before anyone from non-Ivy League schools
- get jobs that non-Ivy League school grads can't get

So your co-worker might not be as good a teacher as you are. To compensate that fact, he needed a more expensive piece of paper.

If the guy spent $50,000 and didn't get an Ivy League degree, he is stupid. There is no value in a small unknown private university's $50,000 degree in Korea.

That school's about $14,000 once you include books. Sort of an average price, actually.

Wow. Alright, hadn't even started putting books into the equation yet. Ouch. Thanks for the info.

What about one I can finish in a year?
