Flickr member dok1 was a US Army photographer who served during and after WWII who photographed life in Korea following the end of the war. His set Korea documented so many things from a very momentous time: country folk, soldiers & sailors, scenery, refugees, politicians, laborers and so much more.

I wish the train stations retained those designs. Simply gorgeous. Excellent find.

Amazing. The photos of the trains full of people being returned to Korea from Japan really touched me. The photos are difficult in a way...the fact that the people have clearly been through a LOT of hardship...and the knowledge that they are about to go through much, much, much more. It breaks your heart.

having said that...it also makes one appreciate what we have in Korea now...for all of the bitching and complaining that people do here...it's worth remembering how far Korea has come.

ABSOLUTELY...

Above anything when people whine about Korea and what it lacks people should think about how far they have come in such a short period of time..

Korea IS CHANGING and DEVELOPING at an unbelievable pace in many different ways too when one considers where it is at now to say 50 years ago.. (and then add in the thousands of years before that)

One of the possible regrets of course I think was how to build again as quickly and efficiently as possible Korea sacrificed originality and aestheticism...
Admirable, in many ways what they have done and should never be forgotten. It is all to easy to forget this on a day to day basis. Some more understanding and thoughtfulness is needed....

Anyway- I wonder what positive changes lie in store for the next 50 years!!!

Some other really good photos here:

Little bit later, late 50's~early 60's, but some great shots of what would become Itaewon, back when it was still just an orchard / farmland.

Good comparison shots:
