On top of this, I'd like to personally add that the whole idea of chaired sitting is basically a modern invention which contributes to our poor posture and back problems. Not just while pooping, but all day. If you look at how most of the world traditionally ate their meals (squatted down on their feet with a bowl in their hands, or cross legged at a table) they had a position that naturally kept their backs straight. People naturally stood up or walked most of the day, and laid down to rest. When they did sit, in most cultures it was unchaired, contributing to good posture. |

This is a weird topic in which to make my first post, but I've been hearing a ton of people getting behind this squat movement lately , especially in regards to reducing the frequency of hemorrhoids. Another thing you can do is to avoid reading in the bathroom, or spend as little time sitting as possible.
Personally, I have spent a ton of time in Morocco, where squat toilets are the only option, for the most part in most of the medinas. Although it may be more of an indictment about Moroccan waste management than anything, I found those toilets to be dirty, smelly, and hardly conducive to laying on while vomiting your brains out. Plus, you have to put on shoes every time you wanna go.
Pretty interesting to think about though. |

Yes, chairs are a modern invention that should be avoided. Just like antibiotics, gore-tex, and any device which takes advantage of the wheel.
It drives me crazy when people argue that life used to be so much healthier and better for us...you know, back when half the population didn't reach puberty and the other half was dead by 50.
I'll take the chemicals in my cola and hormones in my meat and be able to go to a sanitized hospital when I've got a tummy ache. I'll even sit on the chair in the lobby instead of squatting outside the door in the cold. |

I too usually hate the technology-hate that some people have, but you obviously didn't read the article. You should. |

My knees would give out from the Korean style toilets long before any back problems from a sit-down toilet! |

Your knees get used to it...after a few weeks, it comes naturally....getting up from that position I mean!
I disagree on the hemorrhoids issue...strongly...as thousands of koreans have hemorrhoids! It makes absolutely no difference....toilet or squatting...if it were true...tell me then, why thousands of koreans have hemorrhoids? How do I know, ask korean doctors or nurses! Many of my korean friends have had hemorrhoid surgery.
Hemorrhoids are caused by continuously having to strain during bowel movement. Its all about ones diet; high in fiber, soft stool and no straining. High fatty foods, hard stool and straining!
But that squatting does wonders for your knees, thighs, etc
I go back to the U.S. and family/friends are amazed that I can just stand right up from a sitting on the floor position without having to use my arms or hold onto something to help me up! Look at all these older adjummas.some weighing 150/160 pounds who can do the same thing!
Try itsit on the floor with your legs crossed..Indian style like.and try standing up from that position without holding on to something or using your hands! Difficult! |

It isn't an all or nothing issue. Nobody was arguing that we should eschew technology altogether. Why can't we take medical advances of today along with, for example, traditional nutritional habits of yesterday? I'm a proud proponent of science, even though I eat the Paleo Diet, the diet human beings evolved on before the introduction of processed foods and cereal stuffs. But the whole body of science which gave rise to rediscovering this diet is a modern system called evolutionary nutrition, where anthropologists and other researchers study human skeletal remains and the diets of hunter gatherer cultures alive today.
You have your cola alongside modern medicine. I'll have a glass of water alongside modern medicine, because I don't see it as an either-or situation. |

The article has nothing to do with back problems. The article states that fecal waste remains inside the colon due to sitting toilets rather than squatting while defecating. The article then goes on to elucidate how universally, all cultures with squatting toilets have an almost complete absence of irritable bowel syndrome, crohn's disease, appendicitis, colitis, diverticulitis, etc. It mentions how nearly all of those diseases are diseases of Western civilisation, only effecting individuals who live in modern societies. These diseases of civilisation were relatively unheard of 150 years ago, even in Europe and North America, prior to the introduction of seated toilets. |

There are those days when you have stabbing pains in your intestines. The stomach cramps, etc... For those days, you really need to sit down on a toilet, grab something sturdy, and let er rip.
I can't imagine being in pain, squatting, trying to concentrate on keeping my balance and trying to do #2. |

Actually, it sounds like he did read it. The writer comes across as pretty anti-tech.
Quote: |
The new device symbolized the "progress" and "creativity" of western civilization. It showed that Man could "improve" on Nature and transcend the primitive cultural practices followed by the poor "benighted" natives in the colonies. The "White Man's Burden" typified the condescending Victorian attitude toward other races and cultures. |
If one is going to publish some article about why squatting is better, this sort of rant against western tech seems rather unnecessary. In one small paragraph he manages to imply that technological advances are based on a disdain for nature and racism. |

Okay, hopefully the thread does not go in that direction but instead discusses the point of the article or at least something to do with squatting toilets. |

The sit down toilet is a recent thing in Korea homes, maybe started from the mid-80's. Before then, in 90% of homes, you had to go to the outhouse and squat. Before then Hemorrhoids was not as common in Korea. If you go to some of the poorer areas in Korea with older homes you can still see those squat toilet outhouses. |

It should be noted that this website is also an advertisement for some silly device you attach to your normal, western-style toilet so you can squat over it. Try explaining that to your american girlfriend. |

This explains why you often see shoe-prints on the toilet seats in China.
As for me, I wear a suit and tie to work. It's incredibly uncomfortable and inconvenient to use a squatter toilet when you're wearing a suit. Especially if you've got the runs from drinking too much somaek with your coworkers. |
