Went to immigration office to get approval to teach at a 3 week Winter camp.
All my paperwork is in order, including permission from my current job, the contract, letter from the camp, and I'm ready to pay the w60,000
Last year, they processed me in 5 mins.
This year, the young gal look confused, asks the guy beside what to do and says, uhhh, no, you can't work there...She says something unclear like it's not in my main field, or the pay is higher that my main contract, or something...Maybe she didnt' understand.
We gave each other a bad look, and she says, What's your problem. I snap back, What's your problem...Bad vibe.
I know better to get smart with immigration, but I was upset. This is a great winter camp gig, I traveled a long way to secure it. Plus, the immigration office had moved and it is an expensive cab ride away. ALL THAT SHOULDN"T MATTER I KNOW...Gotta stay cool when it comes to $ and govt officials...( Plus mygfriend just broke up and I was in a bad mood, which I should have been prepared for).
Anyway, I told her about last year and she says, Oh, they did u a favor. I forgot to mention to her that TONS of ofter uni. profs do winter camps, so what's the problem...
So she;s obviously upset and waving my papers around and saying to me that her neighbor, the immigration guy, told her that couldn't approve it. I ask to talk to her supervisor...She walks back there with a smirk on her face and I tell her it's not funny.
I calm down, pay the w60,000 fee, and she keeps my passport and ARC, saying she'd call me in about 2 days after doing some research.
I asked my univ. to call them and smooth it over...
What should I do now? Just stay cool and wait for the call, or go there and make amends to the girl. Be proactive, or just wait for them?
I'm afraid she'll try to deny me permission because we snapped at each other. I really want and need this winter camp gig...
I left quietly and did exactly as told. I hope my immature tantrum didn't screw this up.
Any advice? |

I don't feel bad about yelling at people who are being unfair with me.
She was being unfair with you. She deserved it.
If they continue to be unfair with you, yell some more until you get your way. |

My best advice, no matter the problem, miscommunication, misunderstanding, whatever!
Never...ever...lose your cool at immi. If you embarass them or make them look incompetent, then you lose no matter what. Consider Immigration to be you ultimate boss.
Now...from what I understand, there is a new law enacted that you (as a quasi-professor) cannot earn more than your monthly salary working a camp. In years past it was ok, but no longer. Those golden days are done.
Still, consider yourself fortunate. A "real" Korean professor CANNOT earn extra income. If so, he/she can be fined or terminated. This is courtesy so don't fret.
Hand in all documentation required, be polite and patient with a smile in your eyes and everything will be fine. If immigration says you can only earn so much then so be it. Tell your camp that they must accommadate you and the laws of this country.
Don't make waves 'cause it's not your boat that you're sitt'n in... |

Don't go back there either and apologize to that chick. No way. You do that to a woman and they get even nastier. Let it go and see what happens. |

Whatever! Go back there, bring a flower and ask the chick out. That would really mix things up a bit, especially if you already have a girlfriend! |

Bring a Korean who could pass as a lawyer! I got a lawyer to set Mokdong straight last September.
P.M. me for his number. He's not expensive.
