I just bought an Ipod touch 2nd generation and I'm wanting to jailbreak it. I have read so many conflicting opinions regarding the best way to do this. It seems like a lot of people end up messing up their Ipods. What is the easiest and best way to do this? What is the best website for getting apps for jailbroken ipods? Thanks for the help. Ty

These are the two best iphone/ipod touch helpers on Youtube. You can trust them (been using their steps and tips for 2 years) They show you step by step to jailbreak, install emulators, custom icons, etc

Is there any software available once jailbroken that is particularly useful?

I'm considering doing it myself.

Installous is a great piece of software. Allows you to download cracked (free) apps you'd normally need to pay for. Also, emulators are cool (arcade, N-64, NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, PSX, etc). Not not mention thousands of free ringtones, fonts, themes. Tweaks which trick your phone thinking its on WiFi when using G3, allowing Skype, Slingmedia anywhere.

http://appulo.us/appdb/ is THE best website for cracked apps. Its currently using a troll bridge to access the site (their servers were being overloaded). Just google the phrase and and you will be able to get in.

i was skeptical at jailbreaking at first too so i waited like 4 months before i did it but man i should have done it sooner. i can stop downloading stuff.

winterboard is a must have too. it lets you change lockscreen, background, application looks, phone pad, weather, messenger, etc... well you get the picture

Thanks for all of the advice everybody. I ended up upgrading my firmware to 3.1.2 and using Blackra1n. I don't know if it was the best way, but it was as easy as it could possibly be. You are right, Winterboard is cool!

Blackra1n is the best jailbreak tool so far. I've been dev testing Sn0wbreeze, when it's released will be better than Blackra1n. Hopefully it'll be finished in a month, its very buggy right now and needs work.

also, if anyone didn't jailbreak their 3gs yet because they are waiting for a untethered jailbreak, you might want to check my comments in the iphone thread located here:

Thanks. I just got a 3g iTouch and I'm getting annoyed by the system restores that iTunes forces me to do.

Why is it asking you to do system restores? I'm not sure about the Ipod Touch (i just have the iphone), but is it tethered? If so, and if your getting the system restore requests after rebooting or the battery running out, then you don't actually have to do a restore. Just run blackra1n again after you've turned it back on and plugged it in. It won't install anything again, its just needed to reboot the device.

the jailbreak program will give u the option of installing Cydia or rock, both of which are installers. An Icon for one of these apps will be on your iPhone/iPod and after you click on it, it will show you a list of available apps to download and you just click on the ones you want to install. Think of it as being like the AppStore app currently on your iPhone/iPod
