My boss says that in order to register me with the Office of Education he needs my passport, ARC card, and diploma. At my previous jobs they only needed my diploma. I have been working here for two months and told him "no". Does anyone know a Korean website that says what is required?

I wouldn't hand over my passport under any circumstances.

I've always needed my ARC and diploma for that. Your ARC is your national ID card that takes the place of needing to use your passport. If anyone needs your passport info, they can get it through immigration by your ARC number.

I'd say the above is the correct info.

Be nice and give him a b/w and colour copy of your passport main page & visa sticker page to take with him to the Office of Education. He knows you need the ARC back to function in commerce and such, and the diploma can be pried out of his hands easy enough too.
I've had a couple schools want to keep the degree for display. Again, colour copy to them, original to me.

Hi There,

I wouldn't give it to them. Offer to go the the office and produce it.

The first (and last) time I gave it for this reason it didn't get given back to me. Not where I currently am, though.

G luck.. Confused

I understand that is the correct procedure. Do not give anyone your passport.

Tell him politely that your passport is the property of the US State Dept. and parking it with him would violate the laws of two countries. Decline respectfully. Offer to give him a copy.

Are you sure he isn't asking for it to get you a Resident Alien card? They keep it for a week or two and mail it back to you, and that's on the level. Just make sure you're at the government office with him.

No need to explain ANYTHING, respectfully or not. Simply give him the copy and you're done.

I would never trust the mail with such documents, either. I always go and pick it up in person.

Have you actually worked in Korea? The OP is, by my guess, trying to avoid a situation where his employer holds his passport for the duration of his employment. Cool. But to get your Resident Alien card, which you really will need (at the airport and bank if nowhere else), you have to play by Immigration's rules and that involves surrendering your passport for a week or two and getting it back through the mail.

The OP's employer does not need the OP's passport in order to register him/her with the Office of Education. Only Immigration require the actual passport. The employer could register the teacher with the Office of Education just as well with a copy of the passport.
OP, as others have said - do not hand your passport over for any purpose other than immigration.

Either do it yourself or just give copies.

If they don't accept them, tell them to piss off.
