There is no freedom of speech in the Military. There is permissible speech. Just like there is permissible speech in the workplace. In the office you can't say "good morning, c***" to every woman you pass by; neither in the Military can you threaten the lives of your superiors because you're throwing a temper tantrum. This fellow is in big, big trouble if he does not apologize, rescind what he said, and more than likely accept a dishonorable discharge.

Yes, it is an all-volunteer military. Also, although a person signs on for 2,3,4 or even 6 years, they are either at the whim of the army for a total of 8 years or, under drastic circumstances, until the end of hostilities plus 6 months (the last time that was done was in WWII). But from the people I have talked to onbase, most officers and NCO's who are E6 and above could be kept in for the duration of the conflicts since they're not bound by contract and have to resign to get out. However, for these soldiers to get out, a Colonel (Brigade-level commander) must sign off on it. These days, thats difficult since the Army needs people and are doing everything they could to keep people in.

That's why the suicide rate in the army (especially within USFK) is exceptionally high compared to other components of the armed forces.

Now this soldier, although he assumes he is protected under the precepts of free speech, clearly violated many aspects of the UCMJ by threatening not only other soldiers but also defense officials.
And yes, because of the incident at Fort Hood a while ago, the DoD is taking this VERY seriously.
