Hello, I am looking for good places to buy amethysts. Not those overly annoying shops where they chase you around waving jewelry, but places that have a good selection. Korea is known for these stones and I want to find something for family back home. If you know of any places I would really appreciate if you could post info about the shop. Thanks for your help!

I got some nice teardrop ovals at Insadong years ago for 15 thou each. They are about 3/4 of an inch long, 5/8" thick.

The place they're mined is called Onyang (Eonyang) and is east of Ulsan about 15 miles. The caves dug by miners into hard rock of a mountain are now a ticket amusement park with the caverns lit. Diorama of miners, an African wooden mask collection, a stone sculpture gallery. Lower caverns are flooded and rubber boats ride tourists thru. Kyongju, north of Ulsan about an hour, gets lots of Japanese tourists and, not being far from Onyang, there are lots of Amethyst shops. Particularly around the dome tomb that has the bark painting horse saddle flap with the white, flying horse painted on it from a thousand years ago.

Hey, Cap'n--good to see you on here Very Happy

Another place they are mined is near Uljin, which is up the east coast of Gyeongsan province. In the spring, they have a festival at the mine and for 10,000 won people can search for their own amethyst. My family and I went up there a few years ago; it was great fun. They also have a shop to buy all kinds of amethyst goods.
