Gotta say I'm surprised by the review; then again, I think a lot of expats have forgotten what good food tastes like or, perhaps, have never even known.

I agree. I posted this just for discussion, but the expat "food critics" are super lame. They NEVER consider price as a factor ("I recommend the 250,000 won spam buffet at the Hotel Fountainblew"), plus all they do is grade restaurants within walking distance of their Itaewon and Gangnam apartments. You NEVER see them talk about restaurants in Ilsan, Suwon, or even other parts of Seoul. Buy a subway ticket.

The worst thing is that ALL of them, including Zenkimchi, accept ads from restaurants and suddenly LOVE the food at that restaurant. They may even run a "story" about that restaurant's menu or have a "facebook meetup" at that restaurant. That should be viewed in a negative light by anyone who takes this seriously. Credibility? Rolling Eyes

Good point. Along these lines: I'll cut most of the expat mags some food reviewing slack until they fail the litmus test: endorsing Panchos. Any magazine or writer willing to go so far as to even describe that overpriced drivel as food is obviously on the take. Yuck.

Zen Kimchi appears on the level to me with his reviews- I can't speak for the others (haven't followed Seoul Eats as closely though I like his columns).

Worst rec ever: gnocchi at Noksa. Yikes- those things were overly dense flavorless globs. Italian trained my arse.

Probably the two best burgers I've had in town were:

1. Spicy Bomb from Smokey's Saloon - bacon, monterey jack, jalapenos, BBQ sauce. The patty is a little greasy due to the way they cook them (in a metal pod on the grill). I like the home-cut fries and the slaw ain't bad. Unfortunately, since the restaurant was featured in Korean GQ, you can't get into the place. I shake my head every time I walk by and see Koreans lining up for over an hour in that cold, windy back alley. Price: 13,400 including 10% service charge.

2. Bacon Cheeseburger from Hard Rock Cafe - came with decent fries and baked beans. Sadly no longer around. The ambience was good: clean and hip with decent music. Because of the prices, it kept a lot of the riff-raff out. Price: 15,400 including 10% service charge.

I've heard good things about the Chili Burger from Chili King. Kevin, the owner, is a nice guy.

The worst burger I've had in town was:

1. Cheeseburger from RMT - processed cheese slice, bun not toasted, patty was half the size of the bun, and the bun was too thick. End of story!
Price: you couldn't pay me to eat it!

On the right, half a block up from Indigos.

Noksapyeong is the nearest subway stop, next to Itaewon on the brown line.

Jacoby's is good, but sometimes has a huge wait for an empty dining room. Hit or miss.

I went there for the first time the other day. I got my food quickly enough, but it was a bit too greasy and the "medium" patty was more like a rare (I felt sick afterward). I told this to the manager/owner (who was initially taken aback at a Westerner who speaks Korean) and he said that they would try to make improvements. Whether they will, I don't know.

On a different note, is Hard Rock really closed? I know they've been having "water problems" for the past, oh, year or so, so I guess it isn't too surprising. Still, I would have liked to have gone at least once....

It's been closed for a while. The investors (there were more than 20) couldn't agree on anything. I really enjoyed the place; unfortunately, there are no venues in Seoul I know of that offer good live music and decent food.

Small place near Doosan building in Nonhyun-dong called "Valence Burgers". All handmade and delicious especially the Chicken Honey sandwich, juicy and tender. Don't expect to get it in BK or McD speed though, it takes a little time. I recommend the "Sweet Garlic Fries" although the Chili Fries are good as well. A bit pricey at 9,000 won for the set.

*Bonus is self serve, unlimited refill soda fountain - rare to see.

GREAT list. Agree on Jacoby's (tasty, tasty burgers), but sad to see Platters (in Hyehwa) is nowhere on the list.... I'm quite fond of their burgers, and they make a very decent cheesesteak.

Platters' good, J, but is it *great* is open to debate.... Razz

There's also one at exit 1 at HanYang University, between the Mr. Pizza and Starbucks. I like it too, definitely a step up from McDs, KFC and the bunch, better than Kraze. It's not better than some of those mentioned in that list tho (like Chili, Wolfhound, Jacoby), but still worth checking out. Chicken Sangwich yum yum Razz Razz

Went to Banana Grill for lunch

Classic burger was dry and kinda sweet as were their chili cheese frees.
GF had the mushroom burger which wasnt that bad.

Jacoby's for dinner

Had the chili burger. Big patty, but could barely taste the chili. Good burger though.

GF had the buffalo chicken burger. Weird that threw chili on there as a topping.

Jacoby's was easily the better of the two.

I find the burgers at Tomy Roma's pretty good, but I'm not sure how they compare to most of the others mentioned here. They're much better than Kraze, Nashville, Freshness, and all the fast food chains, for sure. They take SKT discount, so the price with fries, a pickle, and cole slaw comes out to about 13,000ish.

Anyone live in Bundang? There is a diner there called Daily Kings Diner. They have a Bacon Cheeseburger that is pretty damn good, fries are some of the best I've had here. They do open-faced meatball subs, a real club sandwich, and they serve great breakfast as well. Give em a try. It is in the Jeongja area.
