|

I wanted to drop a few links below for people to go to and donate if they can. I know the txt message donations back home are very popular, but nothing like that exists here (as far as I know.) All of these are reputable charity organizations that have ways to donate specifically to Haiti.
Please give what you can. Current estimates have the death toll at approx. 50,000. With millions left homeless or injured. At current, over 2 million children have been affected. Either injured, left homeless, become orphaned, or even worse.
$10 is nothing to you and me, but can mean so much more to those that have nothing. If you want, list what you gave and who you gave to below as a response. If would be wonderful to see how much the Dave's community can give.
Thank you. And may whatever God you believe in, Bless You!

**EDIT - Recent estimates put the death toll about over 140,000. Relief efforts are still stalled due to safety concerns and logistical issues.
Please give what you can. This is slowly becoming one of the worst disasters in recorded history. Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary actions. Please Give!

$35 - Save the Children
**Also, if anyone knows of a good place to donate through Paypal, please let me know. So far, Save the Children is the only one I can find. A lot of people feel more comfortable giving through paypal than their credit card.

I'd pass over giving to the Red Cross, as only 75% of donations actually help in the relief.
Here are some helpful places to donate:
Doctors Without Borders: http://www.doctorswithoutborders.com
Oxfam America: http://www.oxfam.org
Yle Haiti: http://www.yele.org/
I gave to DWB (MSF). 87% of what they receive goes to the relief efforts. |

If you are in the USA you can send a text "Haiti" to 90999 and it will donate $10 to the American Red Cross. Or, you can text "Yele" to 501501 and it will donate $5 to Wyclef Jean's Yele foundation to help Haiti. The amount will appear on your next months bill. |

Thanks for the information, Bluelake. I was just wondering which organization would be the best one to donate to. |

I gave $30 CDN to World Vision Canada and specified I wanted it spent on Haiti.
It really affected me when my wife was watching it on the news and starting shedding tears. |

The Red Cross and others depend on these big disasters to fund their operating budgets long after the disasters are over. If you give them money now, its doubtful it would actually go to Haiti relief. The Red Cross is a huge racket. |

Yes, my money will definitely not go to Yele. I don't think that Wyclef is corrupt, but I do think that he is just incompetent at running a proper NGO for Haiti. He failed to perform a form 990 for the IRS three years in a row, and his IRS records from 2007 show that he used almost half of donation money to pay himself and his own businesses. I think he was even bringing young Haitian children to NY to train them to become musicians. Which sounds good until you realize that it would be more effective to provide them jobs in Haiti and that Wyclef probably aims to make money off of them if they are successful. Definitely donate your money elsewhere.
I'm pretty sure that Red Cross purposely sets aside some money for the future (correct me if I'm wrong), as they are unsure of the magnitude of the disaster and response time. It makes sense because, when a disaster strikes, it is not wise to wait for people to donate all of the money when they have funds to go there ASAP. |
