I wonder if there is a possible travel spot that is mostly unmolested from masses of tourists. Kind of like a true adventure. Sure, place like Guam or Boracay is super nice but a real tourist trap.

In this area of the world, I think the best country for this sort of idea would be Palau. Maybe Yap or other Micronesian island.

Are there any other places anypne knows of that I should look into?

Far Eastern Russia:

Vladivostok is just 500 miles from Seoul.

Unfortunately the price for this 1 hour flight is about US $800 return, plus the usual Russian visa mess, so that keeps many people away.

Papau New Guinea would be super interesting, but I don't know if I could feel safe there. I bet there are safe places, but it's got a bad rep.

Vladivostok would be cool, but I am thinking somewhere warm. Islands or the such.

Maybe some places in Philippines outside of Subic, Boracay, Bohol, etc.

It depends if you want much to do there. I went to the Batanes islands in very Northern Philippines and it was wonderful. Not many tourists and completely untouched by tourism. Well, tourism exists there, but not like Boracay. It was beautiful, with high cliffs and the such. Very safe as well. Not the easiest place to get to though.

There are some swimming spots on some nearby islands and is a great island to motorbike or traditional bike on.

I did a getaway to Sri Lanka a couple years ago & it was great.

Nice compact island with tropical beaches, cooler highlands just a couple hours inland, deep history, national parks with elephants etc, awesome cuisine, lovely people, english spoken everywhere, cheap, safe, & not at all overrun with tourists.

Hmm. Think I just talked myself into heading back there.

I think if we went that far over to that side of the world, my wife would just say 'Let's go to Maldives instead'.

I went to Brunei about 5 years ago but only spent a couple of night s and didn't explore much. very small country, well developed and strictly Muslim so no alcohol. However there should be lots of adventure in the rest of Borneo. The highlands of Sarawak, River travel to tribal longhouses and diving in Sabah. Then there is Indonesian Borneo which I don't know anything about but I believe is still very undeveloped.

I had a great time in Malaysian Borneo but the real adventure for me was in getting there. Met a guy in Phuket while riding my scooter and asked him directions ti Nai Harn beach. From that encounter My wife and i ended up sailing with him and his wife on their 43 foot boat from phuket to Sarawak.
He charged us $20 a day including food and we took 5 weeks to get there, stopping at ports and snorkeling at uninhabited islands all along the way.

How about Burma. I spent about 10 days but only had time for the tourist trail before my traveling buddy had a medical problem. Thought it was really interesting and would have loved to have had time to get to some of the more remote areas along the coast.

Ticao Island in Philippines is an interesting place. Its between southern Luzon and Masbate.

I'm on Sumatra now, and while there is some tourist infrastructure in place, it is largely empty due to it's reputation. There are also certainly places one could go to find "true adventure" here.

Do one of those guided treks in the Amazon. I love jungles, so that would be cool to me at least.
