My bank (Nonghyup) gave me an "international" debit card with the Maestro logo (part of the Mastercard network) but I'm a little wary of completely trusting this card as I have heard that some people have mixed results using their Korean cards out of country.

I dont want to carry a lot of cash on me. What should I do?

Please forgive my ignorance as I'm not really a seasoned traveler.

Don't take Won, take US dollars to exchange there or you'll get a really bad rate. You could try to get more cards that will provide you with more opportunities to get at cash, you could western union your self money and pick it up when you need to.

DO NOT DEPEND ON YOUR CARD UNTIL YOU HAVE PERSONALLY CONFIRMED BY ACTUAL USE THAT IT WORKS OUTSIDE OF KOREA.

Take 5 x US$100 notes ( 1 in each pocket if you are truely paranoid about losing it).

Better yet, take $100 for each day of your planned vacation. It is probably less than 10 bank notes, won't take up much space and you can bring it home with you if you don't need it. It won't go bad in your pocket.

EVERY hotel will have a safe, security boxes or safe keeping at the front desk to put an envelope in to keep your money safe while you are out and about.

It really sucks to be caught short of cash on your vacation.
