Have any of you guys gotten a new E2 visa without leaving the country?
The reason I ask, is because I just got one. It's a 2-year visa, and it's in my passport already. My current contract hasn't even ended yet, and I never had to leave the country to get this new one. As of January 12th I've had a re-entry permit valid until Feb. 29th of 2012.
I'm surprised because I didn't know I could actually get this done. |

So, you are saying that the Korean Embassy or Consulate in question gave you a two year visa? And are you saying that you were able to get the new visa within South Korea at an immigration office? |

It's called a renewal!
Yes, they're done all the time! Just like I got before heading to Canada! |

Seoul N\Corea is correct.
You did not get a new visa. You only get a visa at a consulate outside of the country you are applying for.
You got a renewal. If you are staying with the same school and just getting a new contract or extending it, it is very common. |

However, the renewal never has any effect on what the visa says. If a renewal is done, then they make a note of the renewal on the back of the ARC card. |

Hey KA,
This is a timely post.
There was a thread a while back about someone wanting to get a three year visa...which wasn't/isn't possible.
On that thread I made the comment that a 2 year visa was possible, and that many had done so on an E2.
That comment I made was met with disbelief, and a fair bit of baiting.
Anyway, maybe you could check out that thread and prove to the naysayers that you are actually in possession of such a visa.

I am sure there are a lot of other posters on here that would like to know more about this...always nice to be able to point others to provable facts.
Congratulations on your new visa. |

Cosmic Hum,
I backed you up in the other thread.
Also for others to know...
I didn't have to submit a medical check or a criminal record check. I submitted both of those documents about 18 months ago, and they were both acceptable for this process. |

It would have been nice if I could have gotten a 2-year E1 visa, but the embassy said that they could only give me a 1-year E1 visa. Oh, well. I guess I will have to renew it at the end of this year before I go on vacation. |

I was supposed to get an E-1 visa, but instead they left me on my E-2 visa.
What's the difference anyways? |

What you are telling us is that you have a 2 year reentry permit and that it is in your passport.
What we need to know is, what is the new date on the back of your ARC? Were you actually able to extend your E2 teaching visa for 2 years, or is it just the reentry permit?
The controlling document for your status as an E2 visa teacher, once you are in Korea, is your ARC. What is in your passport is not the same thing. It lets you come and go. It does not let you teach, legally. |

Thanks for that KA,
As for the 2 years, is it in keeping with a new 2 year contract with your new university?
I suspect it is, but I don't want to prejudge this, as immigration has some madness to their method.
Some universities only offer a one year contract, which is why immigration will only give a one year visa.
But if your visa renewal, and 2 year contract coincide, then the 2 year visa is possible.
Is this the case with you MA?
This may shed some light for those who have yet to get a 2 year visa. |

I actually didn't have to submit a Criminal Background Check or be interviewed by the embassy. Of course, I would have had no problem doing those things, but still, it is a little bit less of a hassle for those reasons. |

You can very easily transfer your visa to another employer providing everyone is amicable. This is no big deal, and is done all the time.
A 2 year E2 is rare, I think - but it may not be due to some regulation. Perhaps, as others have said, it's just due to the rarity of 2 year E2 contracts. |
