Are any of you here a Korean Studies major? (or at least were).
It's a rare major to see in the U.S, so just wondering if some of you actually did study that and came to Korea because you had studied the language before. |

I was an East Asian Studies major with a concentration in Japanese studies (my minor). I also studied Chinese aside from Japanese. I have studied in both China and Japan as well. I originally came to Korea to gain experience here and also learn the language. |

I have a Korean Language & Literature minor from the University of Minnesota (paired with Linguistics major).
I lived in Korea before college, loved it, and studied it in university. That said, my language abilities are far from what they ought to be. A year after graduation, I came back with a husband and child in tow. We're having a pretty good time! |

I'm not trying to say anything bad about East Asian studies or any culture studies, but I'm genuinely curious, what do you learn in such studies?
I'm studying engineering in Korea, but I feel like I learn a lot about Korean culture just by living here, learning Korean, following Korean news and discussing with Korean friends. What more would I learn by studying it as a subject? I guess I would learn more theory and reasons why the culture is as it is? I want to know in case I want to apply for jobs where I compete with people who have studied the culture as a subject so I know where my biggest gaps are. |

Yup, I have my MA in Korean studies (focus on late Joseon dynasty Korean history) and am starting my last year of coursework for my Ph.D. in the same area. |

BA and MA in Korea studies. Both of my theses were about dating and marriage related topics. Still wondering about the sanity of continuing my studies and getting an Ph.D. (If I ever do it, I will choose another topic, though. ^^ ) |
