300,000 for activation, why would anyone pay that? Just go with a Korean iPhone and jailbreak it. Pretty nuts to pay 1/3 of the phone's cost just to get them to check if it works.
Korea is one of those weird entities that takes foreigners to the cleaners, yet cries fowl when foreigners take them to the cleaners. |

I would guess the purpose of the jailbreak is so you can use it on other networks.
So, given the choice of paying an extra 300,000w, or paying the full price of an Iphone 32GB 3GS (950,000), I would take the 300,000w.
KT will charge you the full 950,000w if you break the terms of the Iphone contract in anyway. That means breaking the contract early, or even upgrading phones.
An unlocked Iphone 3GS 32GB can be had in the US for ~500 give or take. It would be cheaper to buy a US iPhone 3GS, unlock it, bring it to Korea, get it certified, than it would be to buy it in here in Korea and jailbreak it. |

| Do you think that they will certify a jailbroken and unlocked iphone, rather than an iphone that was bought from a country that already has them unlocked. |

I'm not too clear on the details of how they "certify" the phone. But how can one tell the difference between a phone that was sold unlocked (like in Hong Kong I think) or a phone was the unlocked via software? |

i just went through the certification process with my unlocked iphone. it was a long wait (5 weeks) but worth it imo.
certification takes 4-5 weeks and costs around 300,000 won.
your phone needs to be hardware unlocked.
after you receive certification you can use it here.
i would recommend you stay far away from kt because they gave me the runaround for days.
skt put my iphone on their network in an hour.
for other people who said that you can just take a sim card out of a korean phone and pop it into the iphone, that wont work.
edit: if you have questions about the process, send me a pm and i will forward the contact info for the guy that deals with this at the kcc office (need a korean friend to call him). |

I have the same request as the previous guy. I'm about to buy a new cell phone soon (Nokia N900) and, gods and bureacrats willing, I may return to Korea in few weeks.
Could you tell us more about this certification process? Do you think that I could have Nokia N900 certified just like you did with your iPhone? Thanks a buch! |

I'm so disappointed right now! I got a coupon from Dell a couple of days ago for 30% off all unlocked smart phones. I checked and it worked on the N900, but I wasn't sure if I wanted it. I thought about it for a day, then decided to go ahead and buy it. Unfortunately, Dell changed the coupon so it was valid all smart phones except the N900. If they hadn't changed the coupon, I would have gotten the N900 for $420 with free shipping and no tax! I figured that even with a 300,000 (max) won certification fee, it would still be worth it. It wasn't meant to be, though |
