Everyone's favorite topic...this is not a bash-Korea post, as during my time in Korea I've found that most things get done quicker and are more convenient than back in the good old US of A.
I need to wire transfer 2 million won from my Nonghyup account to another Nonghyup account by tomorrow, though today would be better. I currently only have about 1 million 300 in my account, as I have a US account that gets money direct deposited into it. I've been going to get chunks of cash at a KB bank with an international ATM and depositing the cash in my Korean account. Both my husband and I got out 600,000 each yesterday evening, and we need to do the same today to have enough to transfer. But when I've tried to do it today it doesn't work (tried a few different banks with international ATMs). I got these error messages: ATMOUTSS (which looks like the ATM is out of service, troubling) and KMTMER.
The only thing I can think is that since I got out 600,00 at about 7 pm last night I won't be allowed to get out that again until 7 pm tonight.
1) Is there a 600,000 won 24 hour cap, generally?
2) Can one generally do domestic wire transfers until late in the evening when the ATMs close (I've always done the transfers by ATM)?
Thanks! |

There could be an issue with your US card. On more than one occasion Bank of America has put a hold on my card for suspicion of theft. If you don't use your card for a long time and then suddenly have $500 or more taken out or spent overseas, especially if it's 2-3 transactions over a couple days then often your bank freezes your account until you call them and explain that yes, you did make those charges.
I asked my bank to note that I live overseas and that I only use my US card when I travel but they said that it was automatic and that there was no way to avoid the freezes. So when I have to use the card to pull a large amount of money out I now know to call them as soon as I have a machine not take my card. |

That shouldn't be the issue...I thought that's what it was last time but when I called they said there was no freeze. It's USAA bank so they're quite used to having customers living overseas. |

Hi,
I have noticed ATM's introducing a 700,000 or 800,000 cap for one transaction. I think normally I can get up to two of these in.
At KB they seem to make exceptions for overseas remittance. This is only limited to $6000 at one time.
If possible try another ATM as some of them just malfunction.
Sorry I don't know about Nonghyup's remittance system so not sure of number 1
Number 2 It should work at anytime (good reason to set it up), ATM's could close by 11.
Hope this helps. |

Why don't you just borrow the money from a friend? It sounds like you only need a few hundred thousand...they can just transfer it into your account and you can get them cash in a day or two. |

NH machines can take out $2000 at least per day. The machine you are at is broken. Go to a new machine. |

My guess is that if there is a problem with the limit it's not caused by the machine but by the US bank. |

Mission accomplished! The machine was not working but worked again a few hours later.
Thanks! |
