Most Americans see foreign languages as a novelty.

thank the brothers Ocean - Atlantic and Pacific.

similarly isolated Australians aren't any more poly-lingual than Yankees.

Even the Brits, at least by continental European standards are famously monolingual. (and one can almost swim across the Channel Le Manche)

Yeah, but America has Mexico right next door

Yes, and a lot of Americans can speak Spanish. Especiallly closer to the border or in areas with large Spanish speaking populations.

a lot? - NO

some? - yes, especially the ones with Mexican wives.

most of white cracker Texas can't speak a lick of Spanish (they have trouble speaking English as well - witness George W. Bush).

When W was running, the press would write he could speak Spanish, Vicente Fox in his memoir described W's Spanish level as kindergarden level, and being a Spanish speaker myself, I think he was being kind.

Now come on, would it be acceptable for me to say brown bean Mexico?

I'm not politically correct and never will be.

the truth is more important than how acceptable something is. besides the word "acceptable" is something that sounds to me like it was invented by women to supress free speech unlike its original definition or intent which would be better suited to describe wholesale inescapeable poverty across the globe.

e.g. do I look fat in these jeans?

of course you do honey.. time for a diet.

but that's not an "acceptable" response, is it?

re my definition of texas, if the shoe fits,. well.

they're not as bad as many others though.. they're kind of unique.

you want real cracker... head down to South Carolina, most of Georgia.. Alabama, Mississippi, etc etc
