Well, if you haven't yet gone to Japan for the E2 visa stamp, you're in the
clear. If your employer has applied for the visa at the immigration office,
she must cancel it in writing: but you don't need a release letter in this case.
Speaking of release letters, one doesn't need any special release document
to quit and change jobs while holding an E2 visa. In my case, this year, I asked
my employer to sign a letter I had typed up, confirming we had mutually agreed to terminate the contract. There was no need for my employer to give
her permission for me to find a new sponsor. Finally, to avoid any future complications
submit a written notice that you wish to leave because you were misinformed
about the students' ages and lack confidence in handling these lil brats.
Also, point out that your employer violated the contract by having you serve
as a janitor. ( Check stipulated duties in the contract.)
In sum, take off and wipe the dust off your feet.
There are plenty of other jobs out there. Good luck.

p.s. Ulsan Chris sounds like he would shine his employer's shoes if asked to.

I"m back. I've had another read of the origianl post. when I first read it, skimed really (i was short on time) I got a little ticked at the tone the op used complaining about cleaining up. He sounded stuck up. THe great me having to clean. It tainted how I felt about the rest of what he said. NOt every school has cleaners. Mine doesn't but, then it is rather new and not yet making a profit. When it does I will convincie the boss to hire a cleaner. YOu should have thrown in that bit about cleaning the toys at first. Thats going to far with the cleaning.

As for being lied to about the kindergarten. that sucks. I would reconsider working at that job if I were you I suppose. DId the school lie to you or a recruiter? if a recruiter lied, it might not be the schools fault (hard to tell though) then he's got some explaining to do. complain to him. If the school lied. Thats out right dodgey.

I think complaining about getting a paid meal for lunch (unless you didn't get to choose what you ate) was a bit much. In korea just being at your work, even if you are doing nothing, is important. It sucks, its stupid, but its something you should get used to.

if it was a recruiter that lied to you about the kindergarten I might offered to stick around until a replacement teacher could be found. (although the toying cleaning would make me think very hard about that) Something like this can really hurt a school thats just starting out. IF it was the school that lied. Well best of luck to them.

And to unlce alex. I wouldn't think about shining my boss' shoes. I"ve no problem saying no to my boss. I have before and I will again if necessary.

he didnt complain about getting a meal, he said he wanted to leave the school to get a break from being there. even if he didnt want the shit korean lunches hogwans buy for their kindy classes, so what, he still should be allowed to leave if hes not teaching. I disagree that he should "obey" them like a slave taking orders. Just because we live in korea, doesnt mean we have to accept the ways they think. My boss said that to us too that we cant leave if we arent teaching and we told him that he was crazy and that he'd have to fire all 3 of us, guess what we are still woring. And no u dont get to chose what u get to eat for lunch, they buy it in "bulk" from a resturant. it doesnt matter if the school or the recruiter lied, it's not his problem who lied. Koreans have to learn to stop lying to us and they never do learn or will. If the recruter lied, the school lied tohim too, because the recruiter is working for the school, and they are always in contract with each other dont kid urself. I agree with alex actually, u sound like a suckup

Yeah, ditto. There's often an attitude around here that "I went through hagwon hell when I arrived, so should you." I'm just glad most of all that your paperwork hasn't gone through otherwise you could be screwed!

Now that you're in the country, you'll be able to visit places of prospective employment, talk to teachers etc. Good luck! Very Happy

Gideon: u didnt offend anyone man. most of us had to learn as we go here so dont worry about what happend and start looking for a better job, they are out there really. Listen to shawn and get teacher's # and emails and ask them how the school was to work at the whole year, how they were treated etc. U should probably go to the school and look at it and meet teachers and ask them in person i hope u find a good one. Say to the recruiter that u want to go see the school and the housing if possible

I've had eight jobs these past eight years, and not once have I been told
that I have to stay at school during my lunch or dinner break. Nor do I
know anyone, among countless friends here, who has to stay at schhol for
lunch. It's apparently seldom that employees must stay at school, likewise
with having to clean the school.

Well its nice to know that my previous school was a bit of an anomoly. I couldn't see other schools operating the same. Hopefully the next school i get into will treat their teachers better.

I don't think that's true. It is against immigration law to apply for two E-2 visas, so if one school applies for your visa for you, you can easily run into big problems if another school tries to get a visa for you as well, even if you haven't actually gone to the embassy yet.
