I know about the program at the YMCA downtown, and I recently found out about a program at Yeongnam University that goes for one hour a day, 8-9 in the morning. I also know about the Sogang University website. I'm looking for Korean conversation in a classroom setting. Can anyone on the board share experiences or leads about where I can do this? |

I'm taking classes at a hogwan right now. It is pretty much entirely in Korean. I'm not sure what level you're at, but I found that for the first little bit I had to work really hard memorizing classroom relevant vocab. But overall I really like it, and I think it's what I need to bring my level up quickly.
It's at a Chinese hogwan in the downtown. I'm also taking Korean at the YMCA, and liking the combination of the two.
PM me if you want more details. |

I also do the YMCA program and went to that Hogwan downtown for a few months. Although I found the Hogwan somewhat helpful, for the most part, the class simply followed a textbook with limited conversation practice.
Besides those two and the classes at the various universities, I don't believe there is really anything else in Daegu. YMCA also offers 1-on-1 classes, which I think you would be able to structure however you like, but they are a bit pricey at about 25,000 an hour.
I still go to YMCA, but gave up on the Hogwan. If you can, try to find someone who will do a language exchange. They definitely don't always work out and are sometimes one sided, but I have found someone where I think we are both learning from each other. |

I haven't had luck with a language exchange yet, maybe one day. You can try hanlingo, though few people on there are from Daegu.
I find I get quite a lot of convesation practice at the hogwan. We DO do a lot of textbook stuff, but if I feel like saying something than I do. That sometimes gets the teacher off on a tangent. Those tangents can be a lot of fun, and gives me some speaking practice. Of course it does help that I've always been in a class either by myself or with one other foreigner. So in other words I don't feel bad about capitalizing on conversation.
But then it might not be for everyone. I do think a person can get more out of the hogwan experience once they've already attained a certain level of Korean. I feel like it would have been really frustrating coming into that class when I was fresh off the boat.
Not too many options in Daegu though. :/ |

Thanks for the replies. Is the YMCA still a two level system, only on Saturdays? I went there a few years ago, so not sure if/what's changed there. Thanks again and I sent you a PM |
