long story short- my school laid me off about 5-6 weeks before my contract was scheduled to end. My last day of work will be Monday. They're paying severance and flight home, so that's not the issue here.
The issue is that I wish to remain in Korea for the holidays to spend time with friends and girlfriend. I already have a trip planned for Beijing on christmas. What I figure I need to do is exit the country and come back on a tourist visa.
When you enter the country, can you elect to do so on a tourist visa even if your school has not canceled your E-2 yet? I frankly don't trust my school to be open about when they will close it, or if they will just let it expire, and would like to take action of my own to insure that I don't violate any immigration protocol.
Should/can I just go to the immigration office the day before a visa run to japan to cancel it? Or can I just tell immigration at the port that I want to come back in on a tourist visa? |

heres what you could do...
exit korea, hand in your alien registration card and tell them you are going home for good.
when you re-enter korea, tick the little box that say 'tourist' on the immigration form. the customes officer will ask you why you are back in korea.. just say you are here for visiting friends, etc.
that your visa is expired or has been cancelled they will see once they scan your passport.
its a way ive checked myself. it works... |
