Can Illinois be paving the way for opening up the political process? Yesterday in the Illinois governor debate, on the stage were candidates from the Republican, Green, Libertarian, and Constitution parties plus independents. Is this significant?

Watch it here.

But why no Dems?

If Governor Quinn is going to run to stay in office, it's possible as the encumbant he felt he didn't need to participate, especially given the participation of so many other individuals all ready. If he's not running to stay in office, I don't know.

Either way, it's always nice to see the smaller parties getting involved, and it would be lovely if it was a trend.

illinois is hard core Democrat. the powerless can talk all they want, but when the votes are counted, Ill. will be Democratic.

That's kind of an odd thing to say.

Over the last 60 years:
1. Adlai Stevenson D 4 years
2. William Stratton R 8 years
3. Otto Kerner D 7 years
4. Samuel Shapiro D 1 year
5. Richard Ogilvie R 4 years
6. Daniel Walker D 4 years
7. James Thompson R 14 years
8. Jim Edgar R 8 years
9. George Ryan R 4 years
10. Rod Blagojevich D 6 years
11. Pat Quinn D 1 year

Illinois Republicans have held the governor's office 38 out of the last 60 years. I'd say that's pretty competitive. There is another way to look at it--Illinois is a hard core Democratic state because Rod Blagojevich ended 26 straight years of Republican control of the governorship. I can see how that would give the impression of Democratic dominance. Yeah.

^ Plus if it is so hard-core Democratic, why did the mob have to rig the Cook County vote in the 1960 presidential election, giving them thousands of extra votes, and hence the state and the presidency over to JFK?

Thinking like this really didn't help the Democrats in Massachusetts, a far more liberal state than Illinois has ever been.
