Hi everyone,

I am from the UK but living in Bangkok where I have been for the past 10 months. Having spoken to a couple of recruiters they seem to think that even thought i have all my documents, getting the necessary visa is likely to be a problem or even not possible unless I go back to the UK.

Does anyone have any experience or know anything about this?

Supposedly the claim is that if it`s your first E2 visa, then you have to do an interview with the consulate in your home country.

However I do recall 2 (or maybe 3) posters on here who did not do that (even after the new regulations came in)......one of them was working in BKK as you are and the other got his in Japan last year.....both without having to go back home and first time E2 visa applicants. don`t recall the names but someone else might do.

Call the Bangkok embassy and explain the situation. About a year ago I was there (about to get my 2nd E2) with my girlfriend and we spoke to them at length. They were very knowledgeable. Ultimately, we went back to the U.S. since we had extra vacation time.

Since they'll be the ones stamping the E2 in your visa, speak to them.

I have just been through this process as a Canadian currently travelling in NZ.
As a first time E2 applicant you do not need to be in your home country but it is a bigger pain in the ass to make it happen. Had to organize all my documents back home with help from wonderful friends and parents. Essentially the only difference is that once you have found and agreed to a job your school needs to send your original or copied degree to the Korean Council for University Education for verification. Why I dont know because it has already been notarized and then stamped by the Korean consulate. Once they have verified it then your school starts the visa process. It also exempts you from the consular interview. One of the biggest hurdles is finding a school that is willing to go through that extra step. It took just over a week for the KCUE to verify my degree.

How can you do the criminal background check from abroad? Can you get one done at your local embassy?
