|
|
Where should we stay in Phnomn penh? We were planning on staying on the lake, but then heard that it can be really dodgy and dangerous.
We are budget travelers who enjoy nightlife, and have stayed in khao san road, etc. without problems. How do the areas in phnom penh compare to this?
Has anyone stayed there? If so what area did you stay in and what did you think? |

I stayed downtown but u have to shop a very small bit for hotel rooms then I moved to the lake area just north of downtown
I never felt like I was threatened in either place
The lake is more backpacker downtown was more sophisticated and urbane;
people take their pet elephants out for walks in the eves |

Ramen, did u send me a message via Traveller's Point asking about Rory's pub/guesthouse in PP? I saw it on email but couldn't log in as have onbly just got my pc back after travelling.
Anyhow if u were...it is very close to the waterfront. Great place. Cheap enough (but not backpapcker budget cheap). Think rooms ranged from 16-25 dollars a night. Never stayed in the lowest end range but for 20 I had a window and ac. |

I was in Phnom Penh a couple weeks ago and would definitely recommend staying near the riverfront. I got a room with AC/TV/Fridge/Hot water for US$20 a night, and I know there were many other places in that range in the area. Tons of restaurants, cafes, and bars around, as well as being close to temples, etc. |

I stayed at the old california, but it has since moved a bit and reopened in Oct of last year. It's in a great location, and the old place was very famous. You can walk down to Happy Herbs and get a marijuana pizza. Lots of interesting characters around there.
Riverfront is definitely the way to go. |

We stayed at a hotel called "the Blue Lime" and while it was the most expensive place we stayed at during our SE Asia travels it was worth every penny. ($40US) Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor.com. The location was excellent (close to the riverfront and right behind the palace and museum), the staff were super nice, and the pool!!! Now I'm not someone who likes to hang out at their hotel all day, but after a hot, dusty day in Phnom Pehn, coming back to this oasis of a hotel was worth it!
Can't recommend it enough.... |

Stayed at the Hotel Cara near Wat Phnom, good location, boutique-style hotel. Great service, internet, tethered to a spa and a great restaurant. Actually, the breakfast (complimentary) with the stay was amazing. It's considered one of the best restaurants in the city.
It's a little more expensive than what's on the lake, according to what folks have told me. But, since it was the first place I stayed since arriving in the country, and tired and close to midnight at that, I'm so glad I stayed there. Got a really nice room with great beds, a balcony, right near clubs if that's what you're into. Quick tuk-tuk to everything else. Convenience store across the street. They made arrangements for my transportation to Siem Reap the next day very cheerfully.
I really couldn't have enjoyed staying there any more. Here's the website:

Some areas around the lake were dodgy, some are less dodgy. |

thanks for all the advice.
I would hope that someone would not contract AIDS just by staying in a certain area, such as the lakeside! |
