Japanese women have set up online fan clubs idolising the jobless student accused of murdering British teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker
Tatsuya Ichihashi, 30, was arrested in Osaka in November after spending more than two-and-a-half years as a fugitive.
He now faces the death penalty for the rape and murder of Miss Hawker, whose body was found buried in a bath of sand on the balcony of his Tokyo apartment in March 2007.
But despite the horrific nature of the allegations, Ichihashi has become a cult hero to hundreds of Japanese fans.

'When he was arrested, I thought his dishevelled black hair and the line along his neck to his jaw made him look so sexy,' one blogger wrote.
'He's really cool!', another added.
Bloggers have made much of a report that he had been very upset when the family pet died.
'Ichi-same was so cute to have wept buckets when his family's dog died,' one woman wrote.
The Gyotoku police station where Ichihashi is awaiting trial has also been struggling to deal with a slew of fan mail - including a woman who arrived to deliver an album of dog photographs.

well, nothing new really...
billy the kid, Buffalo Bill, Butch Cassidy, Jesse James and who knows how many other famous people from the last century!
all had movies written about them and as kids we play cowboys and indians and usually someone in the group is the kid..

I've heard about women falling in love with serial murderers before. Sometimes people are just attracted to danger or something forbidden. I've heard about Charles Manson getting letters and other people. I wonder if he had killed someone who was Japanese if they would feel the same way.

That is seriously, seriously messed up. And comawn, 'if women are attracted to deranged lunatic rapists (or whatever nautalis said) how is the world going to advance.' That's the problem you have with this?

That is messed up. The guy raped and killed someone- where is their sense of outrage, disgust, self-preservation, or anything remotely related to sane, autonomous thinking?!

Crazy think: Hmm, sure, that guy would rape and murder me, but how dreamy is he? And he loves puppies more than people? Who doesn't? Sign me up!!

What is wrong with you people?

Crossing Japan off my list of places to teach. It's not the crime (well, that was awful anyway), it's the reaction (of a subculture of nutty freakshows with death wishes, of the media who helps in the celebrification of a sick monster). Maybe other countries have something similar, but this was just a little too 'natural born killers' for me.

Ok, the above was bigoted and I am keeping it because I thing my initial reaction is a bit scary. It's not just japan, it's a world that allows for the aggrandizement of people on the basis of a couple of shallow attributes. Here's another rapist:

That image of him make him look like a character out of some Japanese comic book. Maybe that may partially explain his new found popularity among some crazed J-Girls. If I can dig up that comic image I'll post it here.

There is some bizare stuff going down in Japan. There is the case of Issei Sagawa. A a killer and cannibal who became a Japanese celebrity and even writes restaurant reviews for a magazine.

I had a buddy that worked at a womens shelter and I would visit him

It turns out women are really excited by being beaten it gives them purpose and it makes them feel important

the beatings are always forgiven

the relationships are never broken
