I live in the country-side and have seen some truly disgusting things happening to the animals here. I am glad to be leaving here in just 3 more weeks and if anyone asks me what I thought of Korea I will be sure to mention it.

I was wondering if you tried to do anything about any of the abuse you've seen and what came of it?

I live in the city, so I haven't seen any animals get abused. The neighborhood cat is treated like a king near my apt.

the mistreatment of animals and abuse of women in public are the things that I have the most difficulty accepting, refuse to assume cultural relativity, am intolerant about, bothers me each and every time, and i speak out about it immediately simply because times i haven't it has eaten me up inside all day

times they are a changing though, as women's rights and an increase in pets is making korean society more sensitive to issues of violence and abuse (related: increased sympathy for other victims, like students at the hands of abusive teachers, caught on video)

Well here in the country-side we had a friend take a puppy that a man had said he planned on eating. He rescued the pup and found it a good home, but a few weeks later there was another pup in its place... and well.. you can't just take them all...

There's a dog meat farm nearby, there's dogs tied up being starved, big dogs crammed into filthy cages and never let out.. and directly outside of our apt window there's a boy who abuses his puppies throughout the day--throwing them, kicking them, swinging them by the ears.... I got him on video and sent it to the animal right org in Seoul.. but I doubt anything will come of it.

Sad. Very sad. I can't leave here fast enough...

The Seoul Grand Park Zoo wasn't that bad. It resembled Vancouver's zoo a little bit.

But fyi, Vancouver's zoo has been under scruitiny the past while for 2 deaths to giraffes and they're being accused of animal abuse/neglect.

The animal abuse in this place infuriates me to no end. It is one of the things I find most difficult about living in this country.
Two days ago I was walking my dog and found a dead cat on the side of the road...and all I can say is that it didn't look like it had been hit by a car.

I have heard someone in my building abusing their dog, when I walk around trying to find out where it is coming from - it stops. I haven't heard it in awhile...I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Last week I reported an abandoned dog to the animal control and they basically just told me to deal with it (I actually had the guy tell me to find a leash, put it on the abandoned dog and then call him back!!!!) because they are too lazy to come out and put some effort into getting all the strays/abandoned pets off the street and finding homes for them and/or educating people about treating their animals properly and neutering/spaying them. When there are these stray cats and dogs everywhere, people just treat them like vermin and are put in a vulnerable position for abuse.
