This has been part of the korean esl landscape for ever part i'd argue that its certainly increasing. Im not just talking about "daves". On another popular site 34.3 % of the jobs posted for the past 48 hours were for "female only" or "female prefered". I did the math ( yes, way to much time on my hands) Quite an alarming amount wouldn't you agree?
So why? A lot of schools have staff comprising of mostly korean female teachers and I understand if not condone their pechant for working with the girls but that doesnt explain the increase as its always been the case.
Maybe its the acts of abuse sexual or otherwise that has filtered through. I dont want to even think about this subject but is it possible that the reduction in opportunity for male teachers is because of the fear of reoccurrrance? Lets hope not.

Generally speaking, women have more patience and are better at communicating with children then men are.

The answer ----> more clients -----> more money

They don't care about your qualifications or personality traits. They want someone that will bring in customers. Mothers like to see a woman teacher because they (like the poster above) think that women naturally have maternal, nurturing, child-loving skills. Businessmen prefer a class with a nice looking, young blond girl because she looks nice and on some level they probably feel they have a chance with her, especially if she shows even the slightest friendly behaviour towards them. And the hogwan owners know it.

You are being hired as a walking billboard for your school. If they can't get a woman, they'll take a young man if he's not too fat, bald or unfashionable.

Parent's prefer female teachers as they are general more caring towards children. Most school owners actually prefer a mixture of of male and female teachers as having an all female staff can be more volatile. Overall female teachers are a marketing tool than anything else. Since there are more teachers available it's simply allowing more schools to hire female teachers.

OT

[rant] Because they can. Back at home employers can't say that they are looking for a female teacher, because that would be illegal. In Korea you can do this and get away with it.

I bet that they can even advertise that they are looking for a goodlooking hottie with shapely legs and a nice rack if they wanted. [/rant]

what "acts of abuse sexual" are you referring to exactly?

There has been no recorded case of male foreign esl teachers sexually harassing Korean women or female co-teachers.

Where did you get this idea?

You don't need someone qualified to teach English. Duh. Get over yourselves already.

Who would you hire?

That's right. I'd hire a hottie and DO HER. Cause you only live once.

ummm...

What's with this care about children non-sense?

I've worked here and there in the ESL industry and have read all about the industry in Korea and have read these boards and spoken to my friends there.

And so I ask about the 'care about children' issue, because putting a kid in a classroom from 9 am to 9 pm, or later doesn't strike me as 'caring'. Nor do the stories of plastic sticks wielded by Korean teachers.

i see nothing wrong with it. in fact, i thing it is absolutely fantastic.

i like the frankness, the honesty. i appreciate the employer being truthful with me so that i dont have to waste my time applying for jobs that i wont be hired for.

if i see a job i like, but it says they want a female blonde from america, then i know not to bother applying as i am a male from australia with dark hair. if they didnt say it, i would waste time with application letters, telephone calls etc...

these employers have every right to hire who they want to hire and they are saving me time and money being honest.
